If you like watching porn, how can you be sure it's not trafficked people, or abuse etc

If you are someone who enjoys watching porn. How do you know that what you are watching is 2 consenting adults?

There is so much trafficking, using under age people etc. How are you sure what you are watching is ok?

No one can be sure unless they are watching themselves on film

Nothing can be guaranteed

I used to watch, I couldn’t now knowing what I know now

endofthelinefinally · 17/12/2020 13:39

You can't. Chances are it is.

JamesMoriarty · 17/12/2020 13:41

You can't.

ArmsClary · 17/12/2020 13:43

I'd say ignorance is bliss, for the majority who do.

HijabiVenus · 17/12/2020 13:57

Very good point. I read a similar thread when men using prostitutes who could be proven to have been trafficed were likely to be charged as accessories in trafficing, and why not porn users?

Bluemooninmyeyes1 · 17/12/2020 14:03

How do you know the clothes you wear weren’t produced by kids in a Chinese sweat shop? How do you your coffee beans weren’t picked from poverty stricken people earning 20p an hour in Bolivia? How do you know your leather boots aren’t the product from dogs being skinned alive in Malaysia?

Jocasta2018 · 17/12/2020 14:04

You can't...

mowglika · 17/12/2020 14:13

Bluemooninmyeyes1 the OP is asking about porn, not coffee beans or shoes or anything else.. Start a thread yourself if you want to discuss accountability for those choices.

Bluemooninmyeyes1 · 17/12/2020 14:21

@mowglika but wouldn’t you agree that someone who finds porn morally reprehensible but is happy to buy cheap clothes made by Chinese kids working long hours in disgraceful conditions in a factory somewhat hypocritical?

Moonmelodies · 17/12/2020 14:38

Is it ok to watch John Holmes? No sign of any trafficking, or of any abuse other than of substances.

Heatherjayne1972 · 17/12/2020 14:46

You can’t know
I’d guess a very low percent are there from their own choice.

Id imagine a lot are forced into it by a drug habit /pimp /trafficker or unfortunate lifestyle circumstance like poverty

Personally the idea that someone gets off on watching the paid rape of another is abhorrent

1992serpent · 17/12/2020 14:48

Well I guess pornhub would get in to a lor of trouble then. Who is in parliament is watching porn on their lunch hour?

MrsSchrute · 17/12/2020 14:56

but wouldn’t you agree that someone who finds porn morally reprehensible but is happy to buy cheap clothes made by Chinese kids working long hours in disgraceful conditions in a factory somewhat hypocritical?

So what is your argument? That unless you can be certain that everything you do is absolutely ethical in every way you may as well not bother?

It's arguments like that that make people not even try. Surely its better to at least try to be as ethical as you can? In your example I wouldn't find that person hypocritical, because at least they are trying.

unmarkedbythat · 17/12/2020 15:01

You probably can't be 100% sure, the same way as you can't be 100% sure that the clothes you buy aren't made in a sweatshop by abused children (yes, I know people object to this being raised and think it isn another discussion entirely- I disagree with them and find their argument weak). You can take steps to minimise the likelihood that the product you consume is recorded abuse. But of course, unless it is porn you made yourself, no, you can't be sure.

I was sex trafficked and I'd much rather have been picking coffee beans or in a sweatshop. It's not comparible.
Regularsizedrudy · 17/12/2020 15:04

I can’t, just like I can’t be sure my clothes haven’t been made in a sweat shop. But you can try to lower the chances, for example only watching porn actors that are well know and have spoken publicly about their wish to be in the porn industry. Even then you can never be sure.

DayBath · 17/12/2020 15:08

Pornhub has recently come under scrutiny and has removed all amateur content for this reason. Now they're under a lot of pressure to tidy up the site, so they may come up with a system to verify ages and consent in professional films moving forwards. Watching their moves with interest.

umpteennamechanges · 17/12/2020 15:08

I used to watch porn but haven't for years now. I wouldn't be able to now...even if I wanted to, I wouldn't enjoy it because I'd constantly be thinking about the possibility of them being raped / coerced / sex trafficked 🤮

ponderingporn · 17/12/2020 15:10

@Regularsizedrudy that's a good point.

@Ileanna so sorry to hear this happened to you. And I agree completely with what your saying

The point is,If I found out my clothes had been made in a sweat shop I would be shocked, and uncomfortable . If I found out I had masturbated to rape, I would be horrified and physically sick

Surely the point is at what stage do you look at your actions and see who had to suffer for you to watch or wear have a particular item.

Even when the person is not forced, Porn is the same as prostitution in my eyes. Where women (mainly) are coerced into it because of their situation / circumstance and (whilst I am talking from a state of ignorance,) will suffer the repercussions for the rest of their lives.

That said the point about clothes and shoes etc is valid, because it pulls out the hypocrisy in some posts, in the fact that some want to change other peoples attitudes and not examine their own.
Like this post I get the impression they don't watch porn and want other ppl to realise how much harm there is in it. Great attitude.
But they also wear clothes and shoes and make up and want to skim over those as it would be condemn their own behaviour.

ponderingporn · 17/12/2020 15:41

@Cheeseandwin5 I respect all that you have said, but don't agree

OP posts:
Hangingover · 17/12/2020 15:44

You can't really but you can try to be an ethical consumer. I barely ever watch it now but when we do we watch Erika Lust.
