Find me a book?

I used to love reading, although can't claim anything highbrow, there was a time I never went anywhere without a book. Now ai waste all that time messing about on my phone.

I have a few days where I plan to do absolutely nothing, in an attempt to shake this damned Covid. Who can recommend me something light, but not too light (I want to use the word trashy, but know that offends, so I won't Grin ) to prevent me wasting 3 days on MN my phone?

Can you tell us what you’ve enjoyed before

PeskyRooks · 17/12/2020 11:14

I read a lot all different genres but for a light and enjoyable read authors I recommend would be
Anne Tyler
Philippa Gregory
Rosamunde Pilcher

I like a John Grisham style thriller or a mystery or those family saga type books. Not romance for romance's sake.

What about an Ann Cleeves. Her Vera books are ace not so keen on the Shetland ones.

family saga type book
Behind the scenes at the museum. Fantastic book. And funny.
But do make your own family tree as you go along or you'll be lost!

Some books I've really enjoyed recently

Where'd You Go, Bernadette
The Book of Speculation
Of Bees and Mist
The Ocean at the End of the Lane
The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox
The Secret Life of CeeCee Wilkes
Landline

For crime/thrillers I currently like Karin Slaughter, Stuart Macbride & Chelsea Cain.

Try Slammerkin by Emma Donahue. I recently lent it to a friend who had also lost her reading mojo and she loved it.

If you haven't already it might be worth signing up to good reads! You can list & rate books and it will make suggestions based on those.

Behind the Scenes at the Museum is terrific.

Try Mick Herron's Jackson Lamb books for a thriller. They're spy novels, based around the idea of crap spies who've been sent to an administrative backwater for messing up. They're dry and funny. First one's Slow Horses.

Ooh also The Neighbours by Nicola Gill. Not a mystery but a novel about female friendship. Way better than the cover would have you believe.

Douglas Kennedy - State of the Union, The Pursuit of Happiness.

Gripping, sagas, strong female leads. Some of his books also have a thrillery element eg: A Special Relationship; The Big Picture; The Heat of Betrayal

Cheeseandlobster · 17/12/2020 11:45

The Nightingale by Kristen Hannah is one of the best books I have ever read. Its very gripping and easy to read and will get so many emotions going. Its not fluffy though

thinkofablinkingnamewoman · 17/12/2020 11:45

Another recommendation for Slow Horses - really enjoyed it

Papergirl1968 · 17/12/2020 11:47

Have a look at Jeffrey Archer’s The Clifton Chronicles.
Or more recent books by Lisa Jewell, Liane Moriaty, or Louise Candlish. I say their more recent books because they’ve changed direction over the years. Dorothy Koomson is good too and has got better over the years - the Brighton Mermaid was fantastic.

gretagreengrapes · 17/12/2020 11:48

Shopaholic series by Sophie Kinsella if you want light and fun!
The Walsh Sisters series by Marianne Keyes.
The Night Circus or Small Great Things for something a bit different.
I Let You Go, The Perfect Couple or The Silent Patient for a bit of a thriller.

Helmetbymidnight · 17/12/2020 11:49

daisy jones and the six- fantastic, fun and easy!
elinor oliphant or where dyou go bernadette?

gretagreengrapes · 17/12/2020 11:49

Ooh Lianne Moriarty too!

FestiveStrop · 17/12/2020 12:02

Have you tried J.K. Rowling's crime thriller books first published under the guise of Robert Galbraith?
First one is The Cuckoo's Calling. Gripping and very easy reads.

Same with The Casual Vacancy.
