Is character clothing tacky?

I have a 'friend' who hasn't spoken to me since I had DC. There was a picture of my DC who is 17 months old in a character top.
This friend spoke to me just to say how tacky character clothing is and she'd never dress her kids in them.
I was a bit taken back by the rudeness to start with and just replied simply with 'okay'. Her kids are always in Ralph Lauren, Nike etc. That's her personal choice.
Are they really that tacky? DC is young and loves the character clothing and throughly enjoys picking one out everyday. Also almost every pjs are character.
I thought they were cute!

Obviously I don't want DC to look 'tacky' feel like just blocking her or at least hiding my posts from her now.

Do people really think they look horrible?

Kids love character clothing, of course it's not tacky. I don't think she's really a friend, I'd consider blocking or at least muting her and not sharing anything she can see.

I don’t think character clothing is tacky. I do think designer clothing for children is tacky!

raskolnikova · 17/12/2020 10:34

I dress my DD in all sorts. I like variety. When she was a baby the cutest outfit she had was a retro My Little Pony one from Primark (not the modern MLP, I don't like those).

I sort of imagine the toddlers of Mumsnetters looking like the child models on the Zara website, all pristine, neutral colours. (I like Zara too, so that's not a criticism!)

Character clothing is great, I’ve got my coach aristocats hoodie on today.

Its my sons last day of school before xmas so he paired up a pokemon t-shirt with a pjmasks owlette cape.

LuckyAmy1986 · 17/12/2020 11:03

I don't mind character clothing on little ones, I think it's cute and mine seemed to love it. Block her, dress him in what you like and forget about it. If someone is judging your little one for wearing a character t-shirt then they are a bit of a twat aren't they?

olderthanyouthink · 17/12/2020 11:50

@HmmSureJan it just means most of her clothes coordinate! So if she picks randomly it's probably going to look ok. This is an old photo when I was packing for a holiday so there's less variety than usual and the colours have changed since then anyway depending on what she's picking (entirely brown or beige for a little while, lots of yellow before that, more pink and red now)

Is character clothing tacky?
DailyPotion · 17/12/2020 11:55

Yes, apparently.

It's perfectly normal to treat your kids to a tshirt with their favourite character on here, but my sister who lives in a far more sophisticated part of the country (and who loved getting our hand me downs) would never let her kids wear "merchandising".

DailyPotion · 17/12/2020 11:57

Mind you, DSis would also consider visible designer labels tacky

BringMeThatHorizon · 17/12/2020 11:59

I personally think dressing your child in head to toe labels is far tackier.

I personally am not keen on character clothing, but my 2yo loves it, so he has a few bits. He gets so excited when he picks out his clothes, so it's worth it!

Grimbot · 17/12/2020 12:15

Wow your friend is incredibly rude. I don’t think character clothes are tacky. But if I did would keep my thought to myself. My boys both have character clothes. It makes them happy so it makes me happy. If anyone thinks it’s tacky I could not care less. I also dress them in matching clothes quite often (at their request) I know the mumsnet consensus is that this is tacky but no one has said anything like that to me in real life

unmarkedbythat · 17/12/2020 12:16

I'd consider it a badge of honour to be judged negatively by someone like that.

grey12 · 17/12/2020 12:18

PPs are right, she was very rude.

Tbh I also don't really like character clothing (besides the mickey bunch) or even very branded clothing. But DD2 has pjs, onesies, underwear, socks from Peppa Pig Wink

Teaanddimebars · 17/12/2020 12:40

I think the branded “designer” clothing for babies and children is really tacky. But then I don’t like it for adults either.

The character stuff is a bit cheap looking, but children love it so I would let them wear it, at least it is for them, whereas I’m not sure they would get that excited about the Nike swoosh.

I used to try and get round it by finding character clothes that seemed a bit nicer - with a embroidered peppa pig on for example, rather then the full screen print (and they wash horribly anyway)

SecretRedhead · 17/12/2020 22:07

No they are not tacky. What's tacky is judging someone by the clothes they wear. That includes ALL the posters here that are calling them tacky while insisting they don't judge.

It's bullshit city on this thread.

longwayoff · 21/12/2020 09:22

Horrible creature, better off without her company. Do what you want OP, although maybe not the designer thing which is a bit much really.
