Are people in general giving up sending Christmas Cards through the post?

I have noticed in the last couple of years friends of mine (who I keep in touch with by meeting, online or text) are not sending Christmas Cards.
Is it becoming an outdated practice??

I think so. Elderly relative who doesn’t facebook gets one, but why the waste and expense when you can do festive messages online?

Goinghome20 · 16/12/2020 22:16

No, I love writing and receiving cards.

DontAskForMedicalAdviceOnMars · 16/12/2020 22:17

I hardly send any any more. I only post to older relatives. Everyone else I am in touch with in different ways or see in person so can wish them a merry Christmas.

So may cards are glittery, gold or have embellishments on that make them unsuitable to be recycled, that I’d rather not receive them tbh.

Generally, yes. The people who do send them seem to be extremely keen on the idea, but from my experience more don’t these days. Personally I don’t know of anyone under 40 and over 9 who does Christmas cards any more.

ExpensivelyDecorated · 16/12/2020 22:21

They don't seem to be slowing down here but most people I know are over 40.

I think it probably is, sadly.
But I am still posting mine!

VanCleefArpels · 16/12/2020 22:24

Thankfully it seems to be dying out. It’s so expensive for stamps and many cards can’t be recycled so I just see it as so wasteful. And pointless for people you see or are in touch with online through the year. I sent 2 cards to elderly relatives who are not online. I will make a donation to charity and send a goodwill message on social media

TokyoSushi · 16/12/2020 22:33

I've just counted and we have 8 this year, I remember the days when we used to get around 50!

StartingGrid · 16/12/2020 22:34

I am notoriously bad at sending cards, but this year I feel its important to let people I've not seen in a long time know I'm thinking of them. I probably will more likely drive around amd post them through doors myself though as a) post is notoriously unreliable round here, b) it would be nice to get out and see any Christmas lights about, and c) I'm in tier 3 so have bugger all else to do!

Mochatatts · 16/12/2020 22:35

I'm 39 and this will be the first Christmas I haven't sent any cards either in person or through the post. I regularly post Christmas and birthday cards normally. However between work, kids, being pregnant and covid I haven't the energy or inclination this year.

StanfordPines · 16/12/2020 22:37

It does seem to be getting less. I send them but only about 25. We don’t see DH’s siblings at Christmas so we send them to them. We have a couple of friends that we don’t see often and I like to send a card to and we usually get one in return. Other than that it’s older family members.
Never to friends that I Facebook or will normally see.

StanfordPines · 16/12/2020 22:39

I remember as a child when we would get about 50. We lived in an old cottage and used to pin them to the beams on the ceiling.
shinynewapple2020 · 16/12/2020 22:50

I have posted about 15 and will be sending about another 25 which will be posted through people's doors . In normal years we also swap cards at work .

AlwaysLatte · 16/12/2020 22:54

We just posted ours, about 45 this year. Not as many as in the past and we post a lot in our village personally. It's nice to have a walk around and look at the Christmas lights.

Beetle76 · 16/12/2020 22:56

I do send out cards - most we sent to this year sent a text back saying they don’t do cards anymore. I think it’s kind of sad.

Sick · 16/12/2020 22:57

I don't send cards anymore. So expensive when you add it all up and most people aren't that bothered about them. I know don't read them again after opening because 99.9% of the time it just says "To Sick, From the smiths". How boring and wasteful. I make a donation to charity instead and just send texts/emails.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 16/12/2020 22:57

I love cards. This year I have sent more than usual as there are so many people I haven’t seen, but also haven’t had the usual exchange of cards at work.

Pipandmum · 16/12/2020 22:57

I've writing and receiving cards, but think we get fewer and fewer. I don't tend to give them to people I see a lot, but more for those who live far away with a brief catch up of the year.

ThreeFeetTall · 16/12/2020 22:58

We don't normally do them but did this year as we haven't seen people. It's cost me over £40 just for the stamps! Not doing it again tbh

Chimeraforce · 16/12/2020 22:59

I'd not sent these for years. However, this year has been odd so I've posted cards to my family. Bloody stamp prices though!

Skyr2 · 16/12/2020 22:59

Posted about 30 this year ( less than normal) and hand deliver about 20.
We get them back too and there is always one or two from people I have demoted to no card and then I feel v guilty about

Skyr2 · 16/12/2020 23:01

Yes stamps are v expensive, I sent 2nd class just earlier this year

Sweettea1 · 16/12/2020 23:20

Christmas cards are nice i like sticking them on the door. I've only posted 2 out will hand deliver the rest i always get them from my neighbours its nice to know people care enough to put the effort in rather than a quick message on fb or text.
