Coccyx pain since giving birth a year ago

Has anyone else had similar? During late pregnancy and since giving birth I get bad pain in my coccyx when sitting down for any extended period. It’s painful as I sit and almost excruciating when I stand up. I don’t quite know what to do about it really.

Yes! I suffered with this for 5 years before asking my GP for help. I was referred for physio and honestly it cured me. I don't suffer at all now. I should of asked for help sooner, there is really no need to suffer.

I developed it during my second pregnancy and my physio advised that it was as a result of trauma during my first delivery. She sorted it out very quickly.

It is possible to break your coccyx when you give birth, I would try to organise some physio.

Thanks for the replies what exactly does the physio do?

@bearlyactive I have read that but I had quite a peaceful normal birth and the pain started before birth but has got a lot worse after!

It felt like deep tissue massage, she did say that some women require work 'Internally' but she sorted mine out very easily without that.

Osteopath cured mine in one session and I was pain every single day after giving birth to dd

PenOrPencil · 16/12/2020 19:12

Same here, my osteopath sorted it. I can still recall the feeling of floating on clouds when the pain was gone!

WhatwouldRuthdo · 16/12/2020 19:12

Yes, I’ve had this since my second pregnancy. I can’t sit for extended periods of time on an office chair without a support cushion. I had bad SPD so thought it was just a relic of that.

sunnysidegold · 16/12/2020 20:30

I had this! It was after I had my first child and had a few difficulties in labour. I found the getting up off a soft seat so very painful - I used to steel myself and wiggle around into all sorts of odd positions to try to make it easier.

I also had pelvic girdle pain during pregnancy and then lower back pain after. Got physio and I think she said it was a damaged coccyx. I had about six sessions and it was gone!

Interested to find a cure. I’ve struggled for 5 years with this, I can’t sit down for any length of time and it’s worse on hard chairs. I have to brace myself before standing up as it’s so painful. Labour was pretty bad first time and I remember thinking my back was breaking so just put it down to that Sad

dollyknocker · 16/12/2020 20:41

Osteopath! The coccyx moves to allow the baby through and often doesn't quite go back where it should be. It's a pretty easy fix with some gentle manipulation.

PomWestie · 16/12/2020 21:35

I have had this since giving birth 10 years ago. It was definitely made worse by an office chair that was qutie hard. Physio did help. Pilates has also really helped. However, the main thing that seems to help is avoiding sitting on any surface that has no give. Sitting on a hard surface means an immediate flare up for me. I carry around a special soft wedge cushion with me incase of hard seating in restaurants, waiting rooms etc... Feel like a right old gimmer... I've noticed a marked improvement during lockdown because I've managed to avoid sitting on hard surfaces completely!

Broke mine during labour, midwife had me laying back and I repeatedly told her the pain in my back was worse than the contractions. She just told me some women "labour in their backs". I wanted to get down on my knees but felt I couldn't ask. Eventually after baby got her shoulder stuck, I had a ventouse delivery, episiotomy and 3rd degree tear without any pain relief. Took me 12 years to get someone to believe the pain I was in and had a caudal epidural and it's reduce the pain by about 80%. Waiting for 2 years to have the nerves burnt off now. I would recommend the caudal epidural for a long term pain solution. I have to sleep with a tennis ball pressed into the spot to the left of my coccyx when things are bad. A pillow under my knees also helps a bit. Hope you get some relief soon as it is a toothache gnawing kind of pain.

Heartofstrings · 16/12/2020 22:08

My husband is training to be an osteopath and fixed mine. It was incredible the difference. Although my issue was actually after a fall on the stairs while carrying my newborn!

blitzen · 16/12/2020 22:20

I had this last year, after having my baby. I had a coccyx injury as a child and 30 years later I felt it again. I think a lot of it was to do with sitting on hard floors at baby groups and breastfeeding in unsupported positions. My baby is now 18 months and I no longer have pain. I was freaked out for a while though. Definitely see your gp to check.

blitzen · 16/12/2020 22:24

Just reading some more posts.... I had terrible spd before birth. It never occurred to me it could be linked to my old coccyx injury, though it sounds like some women here have a link.

DaisyDaisydoo · 16/12/2020 22:30

I had this, but I had a c section so not caused by labour. It went away on its own after about 6 months I think. Very interesting to hear it can be sorted out. Good luck!

blitzen · 17/12/2020 10:03

I had an emcs but was in labour a while....
