What is your grooming routine?

I'm really struggling with this. My DD is 2 now and ever since she was born I feel like I've let myself go and really just stopped looking after myself but I'm looking to change that and find some tying that works for me. I just can't find the time for it and by the time she goes to bed, I feel so exhausted that the last thing I want to do is shave my legs for example. I wash my hair about twice a week as that's all it needs but I feel as though I need to find a routine that I can stick to like one day I shave my legs, the next day I shave my underarms then another day I wash my hair in order to avoid spending a long time in the shower every day if you know what I mean. So I've just come here to ask people what your grooming routine is, especially if you have kids 😂

Should also mention that I'd really love to do things like hair and face masks too, it's just finding the time for it Grin

Super quick morning shower 5 mornings a week (shave pits as that takes 1 second). 2 mornings I had wash.

I have a bath once a week, which I use to shave my legs and do a hot cloth cleanse.

I keep a small box of nail varnish and removers etc in the living room so tend to do my nails every week or two in front of the telly on an evening.

I don't do face masks or wear makeup (except for a night out).

Does the dad live with you? Set aside an evening or afternoon when he does all the toddler wrangling, and you shut yourself in the bathroom for a few hours. Do it all in one go, me time.

I shower every morning but only wash my hair twice a week (dry and very curly) and shave my legs at the weekend.

I sometimes put a bit of waterproof mascara and tinted lip balm on in the mornings. Occasionally pluck my eyebrows when I brush my teeth.

I never anything before DC either though.

Clothes wise I care a bit more and fairly regularly put old worn out things aside when I sort laundry - to either mend or put in the fabric recycling bin.

Get a good haircut and 'do' something with your hair every day, even if it's just blowdrying the front. Spritz with dry shampoo AND blast with the dryer every morning to freshen it up.

Get in control of your eyebrows. Wax and tint at home approx every 3 weeks. Tint lashes too.

Shave your legs/underarms while conditioner is sinking into your hair, every time.

Moisturise morning and night. Ditto body lotion.

Bit of mascara and lip balm every day. Remove at night with cotton wool and micellar water.

File nails every few days.

This was my minimum when my DCs were tiny.

Oh. I thought you meant my routine for grooming for the dog.

I'll just back away quietly...

thelooneywitch · 16/12/2020 09:56

Thanks all, that all sounds very easy so I'll give it a try and see what works best. Glad you mentioned doing something with my hair because that's one of the things that makes me look extremely not put together. I just brush it and shove it in a bun every morning..without a fail, whether I'm going somewhere or not any recommendations for hair tools so I can actually 'style' my hair quickly and leave it down?

@DickAndSizzy 😂😂

Just a good hairdryer and good medium-sized metal barrelled brush - heat up the brush, then blast all around your hairline with the brush. Blow dry all of your scalp (gets rid of sweat - ugh - but does add lots of body) then sweep through the ends to finish. Honestly doing ANYTHING other than shoving it back in a bun will help you feel loads better. Start with a good haircut though that's easy to shape into something that looks kind of 'done'.

I wash myself and my hair. Some days I dry my hair too. I usually put some makeup on because it makes me feel better. My clothes are clean and I use anti perspirant. I take my makeup off before bed and use niacinamide. If I feel like removing body hair I remove it; if I don't feel like it I don't. If I'm too tired to shave my legs I'm definitely too tired to do anything that I'd 'need' my legs shaved for.

JMAngel1 · 16/12/2020 13:42

When mine were little, I used to cleanse, face mask and serum etc whilst they were in the bath. You could get into a towelling robe and shave legs/pits at same time with shaving gel. Shove hair conditiiner on dry hair to soak in overnight then shampoo in morning. P!uck eyebrows. Lots you could do whilst she's playing in the bath with toys. I used to alternate beauty nights with cleaning the bathroom whilst mine were in the bath.

JMAngel1 · 16/12/2020 13:44

You don't want to know my routine now mine are older - it would completely overwhelm you #highmaintenance Grin

SapphosRock · 16/12/2020 13:44

It takes me exactly 30 minutes to groom myself every day.

Shower, wash hair, shave legs & pits: 10 minutes

Brush teeth, dry myself: 5 minutes

Moisturise and dress: 5 minutes

Apply makeup: 5 minutes (just powder, eyeliner, eyeshadow and mascara)

Dry hair: 5 minutes (I have a Dyson hairdryer so it's super quick)

I have two kids and they both seem contented to sit and play for 30 minutes while I get ready

picklemewalnuts · 16/12/2020 13:47

Hair idea- put it in the bun overnight. It will be massively wavy next day. Just run fingers through it.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 16/12/2020 13:50

Keep tweezers in the car. I can't speak for everyone but the combo of all that light shining in the windscreen and the microscopic mirror on the visor is the perfect combo. Plus if I'm parked up waiting for anything it's a way to pass the time.

CremeEggThief · 16/12/2020 14:10

Em, well I got up at 7.30 this morning to leave the house for work at 7.45, so didn't even have a shower. I'm probably not the best person to ask!🤣

RubyFakeLips · 16/12/2020 14:36

I think what helps is finding ways to enjoy it.

In the mornings my grooming routine is very functional. Probably takes me half hour to 45 mins to get ready. I do this alongside DC.

In the evenings, having a bath, shaving my legs, doing a longer facial routine and using my favourite body scrub and oil feel like me time. I listen to a podcast or a book, maybe a box set on the iPad and it isn’t a slog because I enjoy myself. I do my nails and toenails after a bath on a Sunday night.

I wash my hair in the evenings, add a little product and sleep with it dampish in either a bun or loose plait. In the mornings, I often use GHDs to make sure the top front pieces wave away from my face. Very low effort but a good cut is essential.

thelooneywitch · 16/12/2020 19:39

Thanks all. Really good tips on here. I love them all, the one about doing things while DC are in the bath is fab, I've never even thought of that Blush
