Dd has started to get bo, needs deodorant but which ones are safe I'm sure some have been linked to breast cancer?

Can anyone recommend safe ones but ones that work?

What do you use op

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 15/12/2020 22:40

DD is using the Scrubbingtons PitStop, its specially made for tweens and teens so is gentle but works to reduce the excessive whiffyness at the start of puberty.

All good I don't use anything?

I stopped using it about a decade ago because I don't need to anymore.

I'm wondering why on earth you asked that?.
Anyway I've seen the other thread now with lots of good suggestions but I'm still wondering if they are safe and I'll get her an anti bacterial soap to use as well.

I wonder if acne, bo are all linked? She's got topical acne cream, it was bad on her for head and on her back.. The doc offered oral antibiotics too maybe I should get them?.

I use this one, unless they’ve changed the recipe very recently it’s alcohol, aluminium and paraben(sp) free. It doesn’t feel wet when you put it on unlike other roll ons. It isn’t as good as say the sure spray deodorant I used before I converted but it’s the best ‘free from’ one I found.

Also doesn’t cover your clothes in white marks like other roll ons!

Pink, thank you.

I asked, because I wondered why you wouldn’t just recommend your product to your DD. But if you don’t use it I guess you can’t. I admit I had no idea that some were unsafe to use.

dontgobaconmyheart · 16/12/2020 07:56

What do you mean about BO and acne being linked OP? BO is very normal for a lot of people of all ages, it is a standard human function. If your DD's topical cream is working for her acne there is no need to unnecessarily take antibiotics, to do so would be inappropriate. Antibiotics won't alter the production of sweat Confused.

I'm sure you google for an natural deodorant there will be hundreds. They're much more in fashion than they were a few years ago.

PinkPlantCase · 16/12/2020 07:59

I can see what OP means about acne and BO, they’re both linked to hormones aren’t they.

Branleuse · 16/12/2020 07:59

Just let her use a normal antiperspirant. They dont cause cancer.

Earth conscious deodorant - not cheap but lasts ages and definitely work

Saisong · 16/12/2020 08:05

My teen uses Bionsen stick deo. Doesn't seem to have any of the nasties in and fragrance is very mild. Seems effective enough anyway.

I use Pitrok which works well and lasts for ages!! Theee are loads of natural and zero waste ones out there now. But to add - the deodorant/breast cancer link was a complete hoax that was doing the rounds in email and on FB years ago. There is no scientific basis behind it whatsoever. Deodorants and antiperspirants do not cause breast cancer.

TheRubyRedshoes · 16/12/2020 08:21

Really the boots, I thought there was something carceogenic in it and obviously it goes right near lymph nodes and the breast.
I'm sure other bath products have it in but it all adds up doesn't it especially on young bodies...

Will look at those mentioned.

It was the doctor who initially offered antibiotics as well...
I thought acne was hormonal but it's all bacterial apparently so my lay man thought out loud was.. Perhaps the bacteria is getting out of control for some reasons... And maybe she needs antibiotics to shut it down.

I wouldn’t say it was a complete hoax. There was a very small study that found surprisingly high levels of aluminium in the breasts of women that had had a mastectomy as part of cancer treatment. The study wasn’t big enough to be conclusive and they didn’t do a comparison to see how much aluminium was in the breasts of women that didn’t have cancer. That doesn’t necessarily mean there is/isn’t a link, it just hasn’t been researched enough.

There’s also been some discussion around whether parabens imitate oestrogen and so has a hormonal impact. I don’t know if that has been proven/disproved. But it does remind me of what we now know about BPA in plastics also imitating hormones, a decade ago we didn’t know BPA could be unsafe, now we do.

I found this a few years ago and found it very thorough for discussing all the different breast cancer risks and what we can do about them:
