Why is Trivial Pursuit 16+ ?

CherieBabySpliffUp · 15/12/2020 17:35

I'm not expecting a question on sexual positions to come up so am confused as to why Trivial Pursuit is rated as 16+ Xmas Grin
I've bought it for a 12 year old. I'm not going to have to take it back am I??

Some of the questions are beyond the average 12 year old. Not yours I'm sure Wink

LizzyBennett · 15/12/2020 17:37

I assume because it's difficult, rather than inappropriate

TicTacTwo · 15/12/2020 17:39

It's difficulty of the questions.
When I was a kid the family edition had questions for kids and questions for adults. I remember the adult version having questions that I wouldn't have a clue about like political events that I didn't live through.

CrazyFoxLady · 15/12/2020 17:40

Because the questions are so bloody hard! We've got the family edition that has separate questions for the children, and I don't the answers to some of them either. Xmas Blush

CrazyFoxLady · 15/12/2020 17:41

Don't KNOW the answers obvs 🙄

Kids can't compete no matter how smart they are (especially as many Qs are cultural rather than G knowledge).

We once played with my 12 yo brother and my god he got so frustrated and upset because he didn't have a fig about a single question. And he's fairly bright.

LindaEllen · 15/12/2020 17:43

My parents have (still!) a version from the 80s. There was so much that was era specific that even as a bright child/young adult I had no chance whatsoever.

For a child I'd get either a specialised one (Harry Potter or something) or a family one with different questions for adults and children.

Otherwise the kids just get demoralised as they've got no chance really.

efes · 15/12/2020 17:47

We have the adult one but have sorted the cards into harder and easier questions, that works. Of course it helps if you have a bright child playing against a not so bright adult Grin

Balaur · 15/12/2020 17:48

We play in adult/child teams which works ok. My 12 year old can answer the odd question but not many at all.

CherieBabySpliffUp · 15/12/2020 17:54

Ok, thanks for all your replies.

This is why DH is rubbish at general knowledge quizes. From a different country so a different range of historical/ geographical and cultural background. Hates sport. Not particularly interested in the arts. Very intelligent but in specific fields.

The age rating on board games indicates difficuly level, not the sutability of content.

christmasathomeagain · 15/12/2020 18:23

We have the family version so there are adult and child question cards.
