Christmas Dinner

I am thrilled to have an extra shelf in my oven ( it’s the little things!) but this year we are still cutting back on the number of vegetables we serve with our turkey crown. Used to do 9 or 10 & it was sooo stressful! Now we’re doing :-
Roast spuds ( would be goose or duck fat but DM is veggie)
Honey roast carrots & parsnips
Sprouts
Petitpois
I like red cabbage but DM brings it & unfortunately it’s just purple mush so not bothering!
Do people do Yorkshire puds if it’s not beef?
And how many vegetables do you provide?

Yorkshire puddings in my opinion is perfect with anything. We have chicken every year and most of my plate is Yorkshire’s.

I normally do Brussels , broccoli , peas and carrots. My husband does a small amount of roasted parsnip for himself.

EternalOptimist7 · 15/12/2020 16:20

I do love broccoli. If we were having beef I would definitely do cauliflower cheese with it.

Absolutely 100% still have Yorkshire puds! I do roast potatoes, honey roast carrots and parsnips, sprouts with bacon, cauliflower cheese and normally red cabbage but I think I might not bother this year and maybe do some petit pois instead.

I don’t like sprouts but DH, DM & DF do. I couldn’t do bacon because of DM but I did see a recipe where they are cooked in the oven.

We’re having Yorkshire pudding because we’re having a fillet of beef. Roast potatoes and parsnips, sprouts, carrots and peas. MN has been an eye opener for me, I had no idea most people pile so much on their plates on Christmas Day. ,

JustanotherTuesday · 15/12/2020 16:54

We're having roast potatoes and parsnips, red cabbage, root mash, glazed carrots, peas, cauliflower cheese and roasted sprouts. Probably some broccoli for DS1 and DS3 who don't like sprouts.

Jouleigh · 15/12/2020 17:04

We have Yorkshire pudding even though the meat is turkey and pork this year.
Also have vegetarians who don't have a meat substitute.
So our veggies are Brussels sprouts, carrots, swede & carrot mash, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, mashed parsnips, leeks, cauliflower cheese, tenderstem broccoli, baby corn, green beans and peas.

It seems like a lot but all the kids have had their favourites growing up and now eat all of them!

We all like to be able to make mini roast dinner plates up the next day or two

Bonkerz · 15/12/2020 17:12

Having a small turkey crown here, braised beef and a large lamb leg.
Pigs in blankets, stuffing balls, Goose fat potatoes, mash, roast parsnips, cauli cheese, broccoli, peas, carrots, red cabbage, sprouts and Yorkshire puddings.
Self serve style food so we can eat as much as we want.

We usually have pudding a few hours later which will be a mixture of different cakes and cheese cakes with custard and cream and ice cream too.

Inextremis · 15/12/2020 17:16

Roast potatoes
Sprouts
Broccoli
Parsnips
Carrots

with

Turkey
Ham
Stuffing
Pigs in blankets

and

Cranberry sauce
Bread sauce
Red wine gravy

I'm still trying to decide about Yorkshire puds - DH loves them, I'm wondering if there's room in the oven. If there is, I'll do those too.

MissMogwai · 15/12/2020 17:25

Not sure if we're having beef or turkey this year but we will definitely have:
Roast potatoes
Yorkshire puds
Sprouts (just me)
Cauliflower Cheese
Carrots
Roasted parsnips
4,000,000 pigs in blankets
Gravy
Stuffing

We always buy desserts but rarely eat them on Xmas day.

I'm really looking forward to it, I love Christmas dinner and the fact DP insists on cooking it 👍🏼🍸🎄

Twobrews · 15/12/2020 17:29

We're having,
turkey
gammon
pigs in blankets
roast potatoes
mashed potatoes
roast carrots and parsnips
either cauliflower cheese or cheesy leeks
sprouts
broccoli
pork and chestnut stuffing
sage and onion stuffing
cranberry sauce
redcurrant jelly
bread sauce
gravy

I'd happily sack off the carrots and broccoli in favour of red cabbage but two DC don't eat sprouts, the other two don't eat parsnips or cauliflower and none of them like cabbage Hmm

peboh · 15/12/2020 17:29

My veggies go:
Carrots, sprouts, parsnips, red cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower cheese, roasties and mash.

Yes to Yorkshire puddings, they belong on every kind of roast dinner.

Twobrews · 15/12/2020 17:30

I love Yorkshire puddings but never have them with Christmas dinner, they're too filling.

tinselfest · 15/12/2020 17:33

4,000,000 pigs in blankets

That's not going to be enough if you want leftovers for late night fridge raiding Boxing Day.

blacksax · 15/12/2020 17:41

With our turkey crown we will be having:
Roast potatoes
Parsnips
Pigs in blankets
Chestnut stuffing
Carrots
Sprouts
Sweetcorn
Green beans

Danni91 · 15/12/2020 17:46

Usually 3 with every roast.

Christmas will be Brussels sprouts, carrots, parsnips.

They change every roast dinner but obviously its Christmas so got to have these! So excited.

Because there is the extra pigs in blankets more potatoes & stuffing ect I wouldn't do more veg for just us 5.

Yes always to Yorkshire puddings, absolutely dont need beef to eat Yorkshires😆😋😋

UnshakenNeedsStirring · 15/12/2020 18:04

For my son - T bone Steak with sweet potato fries and onion rings. Triple fried chips. Peas and sprouts, different coloured carrots. Mac and cheese with truffle
Myself - Baked goats cheese and asparagus salad with micro greens & truffle, . Spicy coleslaw. Chestnut lentil salad with nuts ,Butternut squash and gruyère pithivier
Nice bottle of Chablis to wash it down with
I usually make a mojito in the morning when Im cooking

lazylinguist · 15/12/2020 18:13

We usually have roast potatoes, roast parsnips, sprouts and carrots and/or peas. No Yorkshire puddings (we only have those with beef). 9 or 10 veg sounds like a bonkers amount!

AtleastitsnotMonday · 15/12/2020 18:39

No Yorkshire’s here. I’d do them if I was doing beef.
I’m a big veg fan and it’s Christmas so I do everyone’s favourites.
This year it will be
roast potatoes and parsnips (personally I wouldn’t bother, just take up valuable oven space but can imagine the mutiny if they weren’t on offer!)
Leeks
Broccoli
Cauliflower with wholemeal breadcrumbs and Stilton
Carrots
Peas
Green beans
Sprouts (can’t stand them but others like them)

Violetroselily · 15/12/2020 19:10

Turkey
Stuffing
Pigs
Yorkies
Roast potatoes
Parsnips and carrots roasted together
Sprouts
Red cabbage
Peas

EternalOptimist7 · 16/12/2020 09:03

Ooh I forgot about root vegetable mash! I love swede & carrot with lots of butter & black pepper yummy. And I forgot about stuffing. What’s best with turkey?
