Fondue or Raclette cheese

RumJerrySailorRum · 15/12/2020 08:42

This is not a product I've ever gone on the hunt for, so I've never noticed if it's on the cheese aisle or not.

So, please can any one tell me which supermarkets they have seen it in??

Ideally I need both cheeses.

Thanks

Fondue is usually gruyere isn't it? I've seen raclette in Waitrose but haven't looked elsewhere. Maybe look at the online stores to gauge availability?

jenniuol · 15/12/2020 08:54

I saw raclette in M&S when I was in there at the weekend.

Gruyere?? I honestly don't know, never had that, fondue or raclette.

I have however seen that in the supermarkets!

Got both a Waitrose and M&S within easy and shortish driving distance so that's a bonus.

Thanks

Fondue is usually a mixture. You can buy ready mixes you just heat in Waitrose. Lidl and Aldi are also good for such things.

onlythepianoplayer · 15/12/2020 10:44

Fondue isn't a cheese, it's a dish. You need a few cheeses, maybe gruyere, emmenthal and abondance or similar. And wine. It's not a single thing you purchase.

Raclette you will get in any of the posher supermarkets.

SweatyBetty20 · 15/12/2020 10:47

Reblechon cheese is used for tartiflette - you can get it in Sainsburys. Think you can use this for Raclette too.

Thanks all.

So, presumably I do need different cheese for each one??

So, cheese for a fondue won't do for a raclette??

Raclette is a specific cheese, used in a specific dish. Fondue is a dish made from cheese, but not Raclette cheese.

KumquatSalad · 15/12/2020 12:32

You can get raclette from Amazon. Or a cheese shop. You’ll want a big chunk, not the miserly packets I saw in M&S.

I use emmentaler, gruyere (or comte), and reblochon for fondue. You can substitute raclette for reblochon. There’s a good recipe by felicity cloake in the guardian (although we put loads more garlic in it, in slices): amp.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/wordofmouth/2017/feb/09/how-to-make-the-perfect-fondue

Reblochon is lovely in tartiflette too.

You definitely want a big old lump of raclette cheese for raclette. It’s not really substitutable.

It’s called raclette for a reason. 😂

JemimaTiggywinkle · 15/12/2020 12:39

Raclette is a kind of cheese - it comes in a big wheel and you’re meant to grill it and slide the melty bits off. I wouldn’t bother trying to do this at home.

For fondue, there are lots of different recipes - bbc good food have a few. Most recipes use gruyere, emmental, white wine.

InTheFamilyTree · 15/12/2020 12:48

For real Swiss fondue use kirsch, a cherry liquor rather than wine. It's usually a mix of cheeses, but can buy ready mixed in a packet in Waitrose.

InTheFamilyTree · 15/12/2020 12:49

For raclette you need a raclette grill really.

LIZS · 16/12/2020 20:26

Waitrose had blocks of Raclette Cheese and ready made cheese fondue packs by Emmi in the chiller cabinet earlier.

PatriciaHolm · 16/12/2020 20:31

How are you doing the raclette? Do you have a raclette grill with the small shovels to put a slice in, or a large rack for a big piece? Waitrose definitely have the slices.

Fondue is a mix of cheeses, something like emmenthal and gruyere, melted with alcohol. Waitrose do a ready pack for that as well -

IHaveBrilloHair · 16/12/2020 21:00

Co-Op here usually have both.
I prefer raclette as I'm not a fan of the alcohol taste in fondue.

AnathemaPulsifer · 16/12/2020 22:49

I use emmental and gruyere in a fondue. Rub the pan with garlic, melt the cheese in white wine and a little kirsche. Recipe here: www.google.co.uk/amp/s/www.telegraph.co.uk/recipes/0/cheese-fondue-neuchatel-recipe/amp/

Inextremis · 16/12/2020 23:04

Anathema has it right - you need half emmental, half gruyere for a fondue, grated and melted with white wine (add a small amount of cornflour in water if you like, to prevent curdling), in a pan rubbed with garlic. I often add a splash of kirsch too, or - in my younger, madder days, we used to dip the bread (which should be a day old) into kirsch before it went into the cheese - superheated alcohol, yay!

I used to be able to get Raclette from Ocado, but that was back in their Waitrose days, so I have no idea whether it was an Ocado or Waitrose product. It's lovely melted and scraped over tiny boiled new potatoes.

RumJerrySailorRum · 16/12/2020 23:28

Thanks all for the info.

I have madly bought both a raclette and a fondue set as Xmas presents for different people. It was a bit, what the fuck do I get my friends who already have everything, oooh, they like cheese I'll get those!

I can't be arsed to return them or keep them for myself, and I just can't bring myself to hand them over without the cheese to start them off.

I am planning a Waitrose trip on Friday to hopefully purchase the 'ingredients'
