I'm changing job soon and hope that this means I will work the actual hours that I'm contracted to as opposed to averaging 12 hour days most days.

So with all the time I have back I'd like to start reading again, but whilst I prefer paper books I don't like the waste.

So what are people's preferences for e-readers. Looking at the reviews the kindle paper white seems to come out top. Do people who have one like it? Do you think they'll be on sale after Christmas?

Has anyone got an oasis?

I get very confused when my ipad is touchscreen and mychildren’s laptops are not

They yell at me for pocking the screen 😀

I can see me getting confused with the absence of page turn keys 😀

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 15/12/2020 11:28

Poking obviously 🤔

I had a 7 year old kindle until last month which I swapped for a Kindle Oasis in the black Friday sale. I love it! I wanted the back-light and warmth screen settings so I could read in the dark, but I also love it has the bit at the side to rest your hand, and you can turn the pages with buttons or the touchscreen. Buttons are good as you don't have to keep moving your hand to turn the page, but maybe I was just used to them from my ancient one.

So overall I'd say definitely get one with a back-light so the paperwhite or oasis!

I really want one of these so maybe I should upgrade now

But then I’d feel guilty so I’ll do it when mine explodes or when it accidentally falls into the bath tonight...

I love the Kobo. Clara HD is often on offer and has back light.

You can borrow ebooks straight from the library with Kobo so I've been able to read lots of books I mighy not have tried.

Sadly you can't read Kobo books on the kindle. I think there is a hack to read Kindle books on the Kobo but I haven't tried it.

AdobeWanKenobi · 15/12/2020 11:58

I have kindle and I can borrow books from the library. Granted it's not as simple as Kobo, but it is as simple as downloading them to desktop and adding them through a program called Caliber.

If you know your Kindle email (you can find it on your account), you can email any files directly to it as long as its in a format the device recognises.

LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone · 15/12/2020 12:06

I've got a Kindle Paperwhite AND a Kobo Aura.
I much prefer the Kobo. And not just because it's linked straight to my library card so I can download library books instantly for free, but it's interface is much better organised and set out compared to the Kindle.
Also, I'm not tied just to Amazon for all my book purchases with the Kobo.

SweetPetrichor · 15/12/2020 13:43

I had a Kindle Paperwhite and loved it. I upgraded to the Kindle Oasis cause I use audible a lot too, and at the time, it was the first to feature white text on black background which I find easier on the eyes. I’d recommend the Paperwhite as a good standard e-reader though.

HelenaJustina · 15/12/2020 13:47

Love my paperwhite would sooner be without a phone! I got it with no ads and I turn off the WiFi unless browsing for or downloading a book.

JustCallMeGriffin · 15/12/2020 13:58

I love my Kindle Oasis. It's pricer than the paperwhite but has a button for turning pages and is waterproof (although I think the Paperwhite might now have this feature too).

Mine was a reluctant upgrade when my original kindle turned into a paperweight this year, because it coincided with big birthday, my husband pushed out the boat and bought the Oasis as a replacement (after convincing me it'd just be a basic Kindle).

@RufustheSniggeringReindeer my original literally turned into a lump of plastic overnight this year. It would accept a charge but the screen froze and absolutely nothing I did would change it. Waited for the charge to run out which took forever! and it just stayed blank when recharged (little light went green). I've had it since they were first launched though so it had a good innings.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 15/12/2020 14:28

Oh my god dont say that just

I read lots of physical books as well like most people with an ereader but id be horrified if it died...

Maybe i need an oasis now and have a spare, my kindle might have hurt feelings if i do that

JustCallMeGriffin · 15/12/2020 14:51

Rufus I was properly gutted, I may have even sulked for a day or so. I have a small less than 100 books library of beloved novels but defer to the kindle for most new purchases (and if I like it a lot it becomes a beloved novel).

You can soothingly convince Kindle that Oasis is just for when you're reading in the bath. No hurt feelings then Grin

As addictive behaviour goes, I'd like to think of being an avid reader as being one of the less problematic ones.

SpaceOp · 15/12/2020 15:18

Sadly you can't read Kobo books on the kindle. I think there is a hack to read Kindle books on the Kobo but I haven't tried it.

I might need to investigate in due course. I do have the Kobo app on my phone and have read a couple of books from there. But I do like the idea of a device that is not tied to one shop/library and while I can read on my phone/ipad at a push, I don't find it comfortable for long term.

TheTeenageYears · 15/12/2020 15:19

I had an original Sony ebook reader 12 years ago which was a total pain in the backside to buy and load books onto it. A few years later started using the kindle app on my iPad and then a couple of years ago got a Kindle Paperwhite which I absolutely would not be without. It's light to use and the kindle buying /loading of books takes seconds. I would replace immediately if it broke. The only thing that would make it better would be if you could voice activate page turning Smile

EileenGC · 15/12/2020 15:22

I love my kindle paperwhite. Battery lasts for ages and I only need charge it for about 8h overnight, every 10-12 days. I read close to an hour each day so that's 10h battery life. More than my (very expensive) laptop, it cost £900 less, and I enjoy it much more! Grin

Vargas · 15/12/2020 15:29

Love my Paperwhite too. Mine is 5 years old and still going strong, no problems with battery life. And I have hundreds of books on it.

ineedsun · 15/12/2020 20:51

Oh wow! Thanks everyone, I think this has had more replies that anything I've ever posted 😂

Waterproof is good as I read in the bath and something I can read in the garden in the summer. Paper white sounds like a good option
