I have a white cabbage, how would you recommend I cook it in the most delicious way?

Shred thin, throw in a wok with hot sesame oil, chilli seeds, lime juice, gochujang and rice wine. Blast for a minute and serve in tacos with lime mayo

Fried in a little butter, with a splosh of water now and then an a little sprinkle of a vegetable oxo cube, it's really nice!

My mum used to boil cabbage to a slime on a Sunday as a child , as an adult I couldn't eat it for years!

Whatsthename · 14/12/2020 17:04

Bubble and squeak! How could I forget that, I'll keep some back for that.

I agree with boiled to death cabbage being awful, lots of good ideas here for adding flavour though - bacon, chilli, oxo cubes etc. I never really thought to add bacon to cabbage which is stupidnof me really because I love adding it to Brussels sprouts so why wouldn't it work with cabbage!

@HaudMaDug mine is very similar:

  1. Open bin
  2. Insert cabbage
  3. Close bin

Definitely sauerkraut, especially if it is red with a little apple added.
Or cut into wedges and roasted with some lemon juice

BadPoet · 14/12/2020 17:17

Someone has already said Smitten Kitchen's roast chicken -another vote for that. Amazing and uses up a lot of cabbage - whereas I love coleslaw but can never get through it!

OneFootintheRave · 14/12/2020 17:19

@Varjakpaw

Shredded then cooked with 1tsp of caraway seeds, some garlic and some veg stock. Finished with a dollop of creme fraiche. Ridiculously tasty for something so simple.
This but with smashed coriander seed instead o fb caraway

in a lovely, garlicky, gently spicy Ethiopian atakilt wot- just sliced cabbage, potato, carrot, onions, ginger and garlic with spices in a casserole in the oven. If you have some spiced oil or butter called niter kibbeh (very easy to make a version with veg oil), it will be even tastier.

Alternatively, a coleslaw or sautéed with butter and garlic. I'm another believer in cabbage not needing any water for cooking!

My mum's answer would involve getting it going at a rolling boil at least a week before eating.

Go to the supermarket.
Don't buy cabbage.
Come home.
Don't cook cabbage.

If you'd ever been in a school after 500 children had all had cabbage for lunch then you would not cook it either. Ditto sprouts. 💩

PurpleDaisies · 14/12/2020 17:24

I don’t lobe that the cabbage haters are doing on this thread.

You don’t like it. Fine.
Don’t buy it.
More for me.

I had Savoy cabbage smothered in the juices from roasting a gammon yesterday. Very delish.

Crankley · 14/12/2020 17:27

Not as I saw years ago when I went to collect a friend to go out. Her flatmate was just dishing up his dinner, which consisted of a large, boiled, whole white cabbage with a sprinkling of paprika on top. Envy (Not envy)

Wiglio · 14/12/2020 17:55

Rick Stein’s kapuska from Venice to Istanbul
I made it and would again, it was good

That does sound amazing, I'll definitely be having that soon.

@Crankley - that sounds like some kind of weird weight loss plan and really vile!

Raw in coleslaw when Greek yoghurt and a touch of Dijon rather than Mayo!
Make saurkraut for healthy gut bacteria
Use in a stir fry- it's very good in Thai stuff with soy sauce.

MrDarcysMa · 14/12/2020 18:34

Oh and braised with bacon lardons and butter if you're feeling decadent !

SingingSands · 14/12/2020 19:41

Chopped up, chucked into a massive pan with a generous chunk of butter and seasoned with salt and pepper. Simple and delicious.

BurtonHouse · 14/12/2020 22:18

And SingingSands a grating of fresh nutmeg adds a little je ne sais quoi

Whatsthename · 15/12/2020 00:00

Thanks again everyone, I roasted it and it was lovely. I'll keep the other ideas to try though.
