DS aged 16 is really into anime, any gift ideas about what sort of thing he might like for smaller Christmas gifts as we've already got him his main present. He's purchased a foam like sword himself and some pictures too.

I got my anime obsessed dc, clothes, how to draw anime book and art materials to got with it, and a subscription to CrunchyRoll.

All the Anime is having a sale at the moment - www.alltheanime.com/

Thank you, although I don't understand it at all and it all seems really childish. However, I think I just want to get him a t-shirt and mug or similar. Why do people want to buy DVD'S?

Anime can be very violent and pornographic, it definitely isn't childish! My son likes it and we have had to be careful what he watches.

FairyAnn · 14/12/2020 10:55

Regarding what a PP has said, anime can be geared towards adults, just as it can be geared towards children. It's an art style, so it's like saying "movies can be violet and pornographic" - yes they can, but there are also movies for children IYSWIM.

Most anime will have an age rating, or you can search by genre - YA, Suitable for Children, Slice of Life, etc....to find something appropriate.

If you need any guidance OP, send me a PM as I've watched a lot and could recommend some age appropriate ones Smile

What are his favourite anime? Lots of online gift or T-shirt stores etc will stock things related to the big ones. Naruto, Dragonball Z, Bleach, Fairy Tale, Attack on Titan, One Piece, Death Note etc. You’d find something related to any I’d those in Amazon.

Anime, or any form of animation, isn’t childish though. Just as valid as live action TV. I’m in my 30s and most of my favourite TV series are animated, and some of them very much not suitable for children.

As for why people want DVDs, there are quite a few series that are hard to come by on streaming services. I have some anime DVDs that I haven’t been able to find to stream anywhere, legally or otherwise.

Like @n00b1 said, you need to know what his favourite anime is. Otherwise it's a bit like saying that he's into movies, there's a huge difference in presents between someone who likes classic Audrey Hepburn and a Marvel fanatic.

eBay has tons of stuff including little characters. The drawing books are good too.

If he's really into it, maybe one really nice gift you could give him is actually showing an interest, asking him what he likes and

Oops posted too soon. Meant to say asking what he likes and even watching with him. Many anime enthusiasts are into Japan more generally, would he be interested in a phrase book or cookbook?

Finally - have you seen that crunchyroll, the anime streaming service, just sold to Sony for $1.2 billion? Lots of money in anime, these days, it's not just for kids!

littlefireseverywhere · 14/12/2020 11:52

Yes, thanks for all the above. Me saying it was childish was just my initial perception. He does really enjoy it and is mainly into romantic comedies or similar. I will ask him more and try to watch some with him a good idea.

he's identified a couple of t-shirts he likes.

Japanese phrase book and cookery books are a great idea. He definitely likes the wider culture.

My daughter is getting some posters, tshirts of her faves. Mainly through Amazon, Etsy and Redbubble.

WitchFindersAreEverywhere · 14/12/2020 12:29

I agree that it would be useful to know which specific anime series he’s into. Etsy have a number of young artists who have fan art, badges, stickers and all sorts of smaller, stocking filler bits.

HerculePoirotsGreyCells · 14/12/2020 12:39

Dekai Anime are based in the U.K. and sell all kinds of items.

DD loves anime and gave me an 18 page wish list all coming from Japan Confused I had to plan in advance as shipping takes quite some time!

Stompythedinosaur · 14/12/2020 18:56

I've got an artist to draw my two dc in an anime style as a gift. They are younger than your ds so it is more a Studio Ghibli style really. There probably isn't enough time for this year but might work for a future idea.
