Apart from pregnancy and having a cold is there any other reason peoples taste buds change

I love cheese, well I used to. At the age of 55 I just cant bear the taste of it anymore. Everyone used to tease me about my love of cheese and even on this years christmas card from my DS and his GF they have called me Wallace. I am quite saddened by this as although I eat a little meat I am not a fan of it and cheese was my go to food for protein and taste. This is light hearted really but wonder if the menopause has created a similar change of taste similar to pregnancy. I just made a cheese toastie, something I normally love but it tasted bitter and salty so I didnt finish it. Anyone else suddenly not enjoy the taste of a once favourite food. I have also gone off chocolate too so its savoury and sweet food

Keto diet did it to me.

Is that too much of the same thing then? I wonder if thats it, my taste buds are bored of cheese. The thing is there are other foods I no longer enjoy too, I have gone of fizzy drinks and wine and now prefer water. I still love my morning coffee and love tea too. I dont like the texture of weetabix and cant stomach chicken. I have become a picky toddler in my advancing years :)

Well I had COVID and only my smell was affected and only some things.

Jenasaurus · 12/12/2020 22:42

The foods I am still enjoying are things like tomatoes, beetroot and strawberries. Maybe my body has decided its time to be healthy and lose weight. I enjoy juicy foods rather than bulky ones now, so not keen on bread or pasta. Really weird as I have always loved my food. I am not unwell, no pain or any other symptoms just this.

I was so dissapointed with my toasted sandwich, I was hungry so decided to see if melted cheese made a difference but it didnt unfortunately.

It could still be COVID Hmm

Phoenix76 · 12/12/2020 22:46

I guess the answer depends on when this started?

Well I guess anythings possible, but I work from home and dont see anyone at all so it would be odd if I did get it. I shop online and have only been out once since March in July to walk my DS dogs with him. Its unlikely to be COVID but I cant rule it out I suppose.

Well I first noticed I didnt enjoy cheese about a month ago, I was thinking about a cheeseboard for christmas and pondering what cheeses to get, I decided to snack on some while shopping online and I thought well, thats no nice. It was just my normal cheddar and it just didnt taste the same. I have stopped wanting bread and pasta a little longer though, I feel full very quickly and uncomfortable with bloating so have gone off it from an association to that feeling.

Definitely not pregnant? Wouldn't be the first to have a menopause baby

I know this is slightly off topic, but I can't believe you have only been outside once since March! Do you not do any exercise? It's a long shot and not based on any science whatsoever but a bit of fresh air/some exercise, try and live a bit more normally and perhaps you won't need to focus on things like the taste of cheese quite so much!

xyzandabc · 12/12/2020 22:54

Friend had tongue cancer so chemo then part of their tongue replaced by a bit of their arm skin/muscle. A life long tea drinker couldn't stand it for ages as well as other things.
I think you'd know about it if it was that though !!

Sadly its true, my grown up DS are worried, think I have become a recluse, to be honest I have quite enjoyed being holed up inside. I think maybe youre right about the need for fresh air and exercise though, so maybe it could help.

I was in a shop the other day and a woman said to me "please could you tell me if these candles have a strong smell or not"

I said "err Hmm .."

She "it's for my dd, she doesn't like the strong ones and I can't tell"

exit stage left

Thats scary, and hopefully not the case with me.

Not to be super scary but constant bloating and feeling full all the time can be possible symptoms of ovarian cancer. Worth having a chat with your GP, OP.

My mum had Ovarian Cancer so yes I will keep an eye on this as my sister had to have her ovaries removed in her late thirties following a smear test and hysterectomy, she didnt have ovarian cancer but they advised her to get her ovaries removed as the type of pre cancerous cells she had in her cervix can cause problems later on.

Don't your taste buds change over time like every 7 years or something am sure I read that somewhere haha of to Google it now.

I hadnt heard about your taste buds doing this but I have heard that the body regenerates (not sure if thats the correct word) every 7 years so that would make sense. Maybe its the start of a new me.

I'm a dentist. I've noticed folk have a change in taste if they have bleeding gums/gingivitis. Also people report a strange taste after a course of certain antibiotics, metronidazole seems to be a common one.

Phoenix76 · 12/12/2020 23:17

In that case there’s literally so many things that could cause it. I agree it’s worth having a chat to a gp, primarily about the bloating and being uncomfortable. To me, what I hear now is you’re not going out and therefore maybe not getting exercise? Limited exposure to the sun reducing (perhaps greatly) your vitamin d intake? I asked how long it’s been going on as if it’d been a week or two covid was looking quite likely but as it’s been a month or more I’d seek a gp assessment. Don’t worry, it’s more likely to be non sinister than not but definitely worth a chat.
