6 week old awful spotty rash!

Ds is 6 weeks tomorrow and his whole head and face are completely covered in a red spotty rash. It looks so so sore and is also going a bit dry and crusty now. I am breastfeeding and originally thought it was due to a dairy allergy so I am on day 7 no dairy but the rash has not improved at all. Have really bad experiences of GPs so feel really hesitant to take him there as I don’t want to just stick a steroid cream on it cos they don’t really know what it is. Has anyone else’s baby had the same thing? Any suggestions on what I can put on it?

Baby acne? Both my DSs looked like spotty teens at that age! It looked really angry but only lasted a few weeks.

As he is so young, please please do get him seen.
Take pictures and send them to the surgery?
Or ring your local A & E and explain/send pics/consider a visit?
It might be viral, fungal...he needs a proper diagnosis.

If it's gone crusty couldn't it be cradle cap?

Baby acne is really common. Mine both got it really bad, it didn’t annoy them just looked awful, especially when you’re taking photos of them all day!
It does go, on it’s own if you leave it well alone.

Respectabitch · 12/12/2020 18:03

It's quite likely to be baby acne/milk spots. We can't say for sure obviously, but try posting a pic or searching for pics of baby acne online. It's hormonal, harmless, and passes.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 12/12/2020 18:05

My ds had this around the same age. They put it down to baby eczema. I did use steroid cream but not for long at all because I was worried about it, but didn't want him scratching at his face and being in pain or itchy.
It took it away withing about 2 weeks, then I used diplomas (I think, but could be wrong as it was 12 years ago).

Don't use steroid cream until you have spoken to a doctor to make sure it's ok. Take him to be seen ASAP,I'll incase its something else.

Here is a pic from a couple of days ago. The lights terrible now so can’t get a good one of how it looks today. But it’s spread a bit more and also dried up a bit more

DD1 looked like that for a few weeks. It was baby acne/milk spots. It cleared up on its own but slowly. If you're worried have them seen but mine was fine in herself just really spotty 😂

He is also seriously gassy. Even with infacol and always brings up burps, which is why I was thinking it could be a cows milk allergy. I will call the gp on Monday and see what they say then.

It looks like baby acne. All newborns are gassy and burp a lot. Both of mine certainly were, despite being EBF. An intolerance would generally involve a lot of crying and pain.

I've got a 4 week old covered in neonatal acne so don't worry!! It's very normal (more common in boys although my 4 week old is a girl!). Hers has been on her chest too! She started with it at about 2 weeks old and it really just got worse and worse for a week or so and now 🤞🏼 the last couple of days I think we've turned a corner! Also breastfeeding here. By all means cut out the dairy - it can't hurt to try - I thought about it but from everything I've read ours most likely just a bad case of normal baby acne.

BergamotMouse · 12/12/2020 19:00

My son was very similar. Was told it was baby eczema and would pass by the time he was 1. Wasn't until he was 5 months old that the GP suggested I cut out dairy. I did this, not much improvement so then cut out egg and soya (very closely linked to dairy allergy due to the protein shape). After a fairly big allergic reaction we got him allergy tested and he had an allergy to milk and egg. I'd suggest you cut these out too (really hard at first but I'm 2 years down the line and still breastfeeding, you get used to it after a couple of weeks). I really wish I'd done it sooner as he became a different baby within about a week. He'd be extremely hard work up to that point.

16more · 12/12/2020 19:20

@BergamotMouse he is the same, seriously hard work-basically if he’s awake and not feeding he’s crying and fussing. Going to persevere with cutting out the dairy for another couple of weeks as I’ve heard it can take 3 weeks before it’s out of both of our systems. Hopefully it is just acne though. It’s good to hear you got to the bottom of the problem

Looks like baby acne. My son was covered from about 2 weeks old. Looked awful. You could try dabbing breast milk on the spots but you don’t need to put anything on it. It will clear up.

BounceyBumblebee · 12/12/2020 20:10

It'll be washing powder. Mine both get this too. You need to wash all your clothes and bed sheets in baby sensitive washing powder. Child's farm wash and moisturiser should help clear it up or put some breast milk on baby's face.

16more · 12/12/2020 20:12

@BounceyBumblebee we do use fairy non bio for everything, wouldn’t it be all over his body too if it was washing powder?

For mine I washed their clothes in fairy but not my own. So they got rashes on their faces from rubbing on my clothes. So they didn't get it on their bodies because only the skin on their faces was touching my clothes. Mine are sensetive to all fabric softeners too and cheap baby bath. But so am I.
