Lakeland Heated Airer

I had one delivered yesterday and I am so disappointed. It’s only drying the bit of clothing that is touching the heated rail bit. The heat isn’t spreading through the clothes. Before I spend £30 investing in one of their covers that extra will a cover help? I put a load on it last night and it’s not dry. It’s not been on all this time but a good 6-7 hours it’s been on. Hugely disappointed.

I always drape something over it so if you've washed a duvet cover or you have a sheet to hand, pop that over it

Friendshighschool · 12/12/2020 14:30

That’s a good idea. Will try that.

The cover made a big difference with ours, but yes know what you mean - I was disappointed also.
It works well when you lay clothes across the bars, rather than over them but you don’t get as much dry.
It‘s good for days when you would not have your heating on but want something drying for the next day. It also means clothes are all in one place rather than on stands all over the house. We don’t have a tumble dryer so we just use stands or the line.

I’ve got the cover and am also underwhelmed.

GoldenMalicious · 12/12/2020 14:33

I usually try to put things over two rails rather than one, which helps a lot. As PP says, a sheet or duvet cover over the top also makes a big difference. Overall, I just accept that I cannot overload it, and give things a bit more space to air.

Designateddiver · 12/12/2020 14:33

Same here, have an old double valance to put over, it works very well. Just don't bunch clothes on it as dp does everytime!

Ironicpentameter · 12/12/2020 14:33

I have a cover but have never used it. Like QueenPaws says, you can drape a sheet over the top, which has the same effect as the cover and dries the sheet also. I tend to just have stuff laying across the top of the bars, flat, rather than hanging down, unless it's lightweight items.

Ironicpentameter · 12/12/2020 14:34

Mind you, have just installed a heatpump tumble and it has transformed my laundry experience!!

pinkbalconyrailing · 12/12/2020 14:35

I have it in the draft attic and it speeds up drying time quite a bit.

it's not as fast as a tumble dryer and if there is not much air circulation/draft or a cover the drying time doesn't reduce as much.

it's great, but not magic.

Friendshighschool · 12/12/2020 14:35

Thanks all.

That's why we sent ours back.

Damp clothes with one dry line across the middle wasn't really what I was hoping for. Plus it takes up so much space in a room!

fruitpastille · 12/12/2020 14:35

It is underwhelming but I still use it all the time in winter. It will dry most things overnight but stuff like jeans need longer. I only use alternate bars usually. A sheet on top helps.

halfgirlhalfturnip · 12/12/2020 14:36

The cover makes all the difference - I love mine and use it every day of the winter.

absolutehush · 12/12/2020 14:40

I use mine with a dehumidifier under the duvet cover I drape over and it's so much better! It does work better than just an airer but it's no tumble dry/line dry.

It's important not to over crowd it. I do a wash every single day and I can dry it all before the next wash is done.

ColdCottage · 12/12/2020 14:41

I've had one for years and it's always all dry if I leave it over night. I usually put items over 2 bars and anything think I lay across the whole layer. I told trousers in half and lay several like this. Works fine for me

KeyWorker · 12/12/2020 16:42

The cover makes all the difference, you could always try with a (dry) sheet draped over the top first but I did buy the cover with mine.

CountessFrog · 12/12/2020 16:48

I’ve had one for a couple of months and I’m also disappointed. I have the cover, too.

I bought it because, after we got a dog I was always having to move the clothes horse to go in/out of the back door.

I now have the heated airer in the garage instead, however it only dries clothes if you lay them across the bars. I can do two school skirts, two school jumpers and two pairs of Lycra leggings in one go. Nothing else.

I suppose it would work better if it wasn’t in the garage, however it’s absolutely huge!

Feel like I was duped.

Timbucktime · 12/12/2020 16:48

I cover mine with a couple of sheets pegged together.
There is a Mack to how you fill the rails, some prefer to lay things over the rails, I prefer to drape over each rail. I don’t tend to used the bottom rail other than laying something like a tea towel across the whole of it.

Oh tell me about these please. Do they have to be fitted in like a traditional vented dryer?
DobbyTheHouseElk · 12/12/2020 16:55

Mine works fine. There is a knack to it.

cherrypie790 · 12/12/2020 16:57

There's a knack to loading it. I put mine on last thing at night and it's always dry by morning. And it doesn't shrink your clothes.

It's also made a massive difference to our electric bill.

Ironicpentameter · 12/12/2020 16:59

@Frenchdressing - they are fab. No vent necessary, just plug it in. Expensive to buy but cheap to run. I now put the all the extra heavy cottons and towels etc in that and use the Lakeland contraption for any lightweight stuff.

endofthelinefinally · 12/12/2020 17:00

I have had mine for years. I love it. I put a heavy table cloth over it, fasten it with clothes pegs and it all dries overnight. It holds 2 loads of washing. I hang shirts on hangers between the bars and round the outside.

cookiesthatcrumble · 12/12/2020 17:01

I have one and am underwhelmed. But I have started putting a duvet cover over it and a fan heater underneath.

Not quite the most cost effecctive response, but useful.

When our boiler was out it was really useful forhelping to heat our small sitting room though. Very effective,
