Are you taking your children out of school next week?

I’m a teacher so I have to keep going but I’m tempted to pull DD out of nursery so even if my bubble pops she can still do Christmas activities with her dad and the family members in our Christmas bubble. Just wondering what other people are thinking.

DD is currently isolating due to a class member testing positive. Her isolation is due to end midnight 17th so headteacher has emailed to state all Y3 children must be back in school for the last day of term - 18th.

Not a prayer am I sending DD in on the 18th to risk having to isolate yet again. I’m wfh, DH owns a business and won’t be working from Weds and the toddlers last day at nursery is Monday. Not worth the risk for us.

SendHelp30 · 12/12/2020 21:08

Oh just to add- there’s now only Reception & Y5 left in DDs class so it’s clearly rife in her school!

premiumQuaver · 12/12/2020 21:09

What do you say though to avoid a fine ? I want to keep my dc off next week and the first week back

@MistletoeandGin totally understand where you are coming from. DD is only 3 and has had the nativity and card making a jumper day so it’s only the party on Friday which is special which she is missing.

@premiumQuaver I wrote apologising, but explaining the circumstance re his sen and said I understand if they choose to mark it as unauthorised but would hope they were lenient.

We are in Kent. Cases are spiralling here, only today I've had 2 colleagues test positive. It's not like it was in September for us. It's very different.

Apparently schools in the area haven't run any fines so far, just put as unauthorised

Spongebobsquarefringe · 12/12/2020 21:15

No both mine will be going to school. Eldest yr8 her school had nothing since they went back and 2 cases in primary since we went back, my DD year 5 and the 2 cases were in infant part so doesn’t effect her. Last day is half day too

Nursery is very different to school! Completely different decision.

ArabellaScott · 12/12/2020 21:19

We're in Scotland, so should be in school til Xmas Eve. I'm not sending them in the week after next, though.

MarshaBradyo · 12/12/2020 21:20

No also primary not doing the inset day thing

PreRaphaeliteMotherhood · 12/12/2020 21:23

I’m keeping DS at nursery (he’s even going on Christmas Eve because I am a mean mother!) but they’ve only had one case, and the child was isolating with a family member and hadn’t been at nursery anyway, so the chances seem pretty slim.

TheGremlinsAreComing · 12/12/2020 21:25

Took mine out yesterday and they're not going back until January - if at all.

Glenthebattleostrich · 12/12/2020 21:26

I am. We have seen family for 1.5 hours this year and had so many special visits and trips with them cancelled I don't think the grandparents can cope with another disappointment, MIL especially. She has dementia so we don't know how many more Christmases we will get with her being her.

elfycat · 12/12/2020 21:34

Mine will be going in (Y5 and Y7). As long as a bubble doesn't pop we'll drive down to my parents and stand in the garden having a chat before leaving gifts in their garage. Then onto see my goddaughter (It will be her birthday and I've not missed one) for a cup of tea in their garden and gift leaving.

Apart from that trip it's just the 4 of us at home for Christmas day. Our area is fairly low in cases so fingers crossed.

didireallysaythat · 12/12/2020 21:37

Dilemma here. DS1 was due back in on Friday. DS2 was due to be out for the rest of term but now the government changed it from 14 to 10 days. So DS2 is back in on Tuesday and we're waiting to hear what DS1's school will do as they sent a remote timetable for the entire year group out in Friday before the announcement.

Seriously tempted to keep them both off, and we're not going to see family over Xmas.

FelicityBob · 12/12/2020 21:40

Our county are closing schools from Tuesday, primary and secondary. I think it’s an awful idea given that we have had no COVID cases in the school. I think it should be parental choice no forced upon us.

DigitalGhost · 12/12/2020 21:43

My DD finished nursery on Wednesday. She would have been there until the 23rd but we decided we didn't want to risk isolating at Christmas.
Tbh we know we're being ridiculously cautious but we want a normal as possible Christmas with our family and let them finally meet our other DD (7 mth).

RainySaturday · 12/12/2020 21:57

Yes, my year 10 child will be home working online from Thursday. We need Xmas this year, and she's pretty good at working from home. I see it as helping the teachers by reducing the risk as they definately need and deserve a normal break and Xmas.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 12/12/2020 22:21

@FelicityBob that's dreadful. This is why I think a school by school approach should be taken. DS's primary have only had 2 Covid cases since reopening and they were both before October half term. The head has decided not to use the inset day as there have been no cases at school for several weeks. I'm glad she's taken a sensible approach.

Same here. We’re tier 3 (Midlands) and our school has had one case since September (unfortunately DD1’s teacher so she had to isolate).
A blanket approach is inappropriate.

flower11 · 12/12/2020 22:47

Very tempting, there are currently 8 classes isolating in my children's school. Youngest isolating now end on Tuesday. I'm thinking of not sending him back and taking eldest out from Tuesday. Last week of primary they aren't going to miss much .

DS' year has been sent home as they don't have enough teachers. But thankfully are doing proper online lessons to his timetable. But if his year was open he'd be going. He's missed too much already this year.

SilkiesnowchicksandXmastreecat · 12/12/2020 23:01

Both mine will be in school, just having Christmas at home as a family.

PetertheWalrus · 12/12/2020 23:01

No, of course not.

DebbieFiderer · 12/12/2020 23:17

Mine will be in school, even a small amount of learning is important, plus DH and I will be both be going out to work up to and including Xmas Eve anyway. Our plans for Christmas are to see my parents and sister, who would be doing the childcare for us if we did take them out, so it doesn't make a huge difference either way. And if someone gets identified as a contact and we have to isolate, we'll just have a chilled family day and zoom with my parents.
