SI joint instability anyone?

Posting here for traffic.
I've just ordered a support belt - I can't carry on with the pain and the clunking (which is honestly scaring me now).
Any advice please?

Do you see a chiropractor?

I have SI issues, and could be literally crying in pain some days. Tried painkillers, tried physio and none of it worked but after 3 sessions with a chiropractor i forgot i was ever in pain. It does need maintenance but a few initial sessions is amazing relief.

Are you pregnant? I suffered when pregnant then it was never the same after that. But now I’ve been diagnosed with hyper mobility and it’s quite debilitating. I find very hot baths help with the pain.

mineofuselessinformation · 11/12/2020 21:16

Deffo not pregnant - had all of the equipment taken out several years ago! Grin
I did have SPD (as it was called then, now called PGP) when pregnant.
I do have hyper mobile joints and arthritis.
Is it worth trying to see my GP?
I got fobbed off with long-distance physio (still on-going) for a problem with my knee. GP didn't want to see me at all.

Lol! I assumed my pain was my SI joint again, but apparently not. I have cocodamol from the GP for the pain although I try to not take too many. Plus I have physio exercises. I also have a Deep Heat roller which helps. I just thought you were pregnant with having the belt - wondered how it worked without the belly!! Although I must say that my jeggings which are tighter are a great support, which I guess work in a similar manner.

mineofuselessinformation · 11/12/2020 22:35

It's one that is supposed to grip well!
The belly is only related to age..... Wink

The belt arrived and is bloody marvellous!
I can walk normally again. Smile

Ah what belt did you get? Considering getting one myself!

mineofuselessinformation · 13/12/2020 18:07

It's this one.
A bit bulky but I don't care as long as it works.

@mineofuselessinformation that’s great news! X

OldPodge · 13/12/2020 18:17

Thanks for this OP, think I will get a belt too. I previously got some relief for my dodgy SI joint with regular yoga. That and enough painkillers to floor an elephant.

ManxRhyme · 13/12/2020 18:37

Thank you OP

mineofuselessinformation · 13/12/2020 19:09

Did any of you get any help if you went to your GP?

I had SI problem for about a year and then in woke up one day it was gone - so bizarre.

Over the 12 months my amazing gp - have since moved to one that is utterly depressing- helped me no end.

1- initial emergency appointment
2 - initial codine tablets
3- then slow release tramadol for the pain as it was worsening
4 physio who referred me to the back pain class
5 senior physio who arranged mri
6 visit to the orthopaedics surgeon
7 I woke up and it was gone!

I now have hurt my back again and I take amytriplyline this time it is more than two years now so no overnight miracle cure this time

Hope it get better

cherrypiepie · 13/12/2020 22:21

I found some great videos on you tube for my back pain- obviously be carfeful. The has fit ones I loved so much this time round.

I literally remember the horrific pain I feel for you.

BabbleBee · 13/12/2020 22:23

I had SPD in pregnancy and my GP was worse then useless. I was stuck on loads of analgesia that did nothing so was referred to a pain clinic as it was ‘clearly in my head’ 🙄

I saw an osteopath who said it was SI dysfunction and within 6 weeks I had absolutely no pain and could walk properly again. He gave me exercises to do to strengthen the supporting structures to get everything held in the right place.

DD is 13 now and I still have the odd day when I get a little pain, but nothing like it was.

mineofuselessinformation · 13/12/2020 22:30

So many replies!
Thank you. I'm just cautious as I already have a knee problem and six weeks in all I've got is some not very helpful exercises. Next stop is a steroid injection - no imaging offered at the moment. Hmm

I saw a great physio on the nhs for mine. She properly clunked it into place. Gave me a load of exercises to improve my glute muscles which she says was causing the issue.

Spitoutthebauble · 13/12/2020 22:44

Yoga can really disturb the SI joint (it’s how I damaged mine!) so be really careful! I have just started repracticing after a decade off, but in that time I rebuilt my back with pilates.

I recommend APPI or body control pilates, but for online and free I think ‘Pilates and Yoga with Katja’ (I mostly do just the pilates ones) are very good, she’s very precise and lovely.

Also an AMAZING teacher called Julie Baird, she’s French but lives in the states and is on Instagram as Our Fit Family Life. She is very focussed on female bodies and strengthening core and pelvic floor (which helps stabilise SI region).

I also originally had amazing NHS physio help.

Pilates is the only thing that has controlled my SI joint issues long term. I'm hypermobile so anything a chiro could do would eventually pop out again. It does still flare up now and again but nowhere near as bad as it used to.

GPs I have seen ranged from clueless to useless. Physios were good but all pushed pilates heavily and finally I gave in and it turned out they were right. Just make sure you let the teacher know at the start of the class and they will make sure you're not doing any exercises that are contraindicated, give you alternatives and advise on how to strengthen the supporting muscles. I would really recommend going to a real life class and ideally a few one to one sessions before trying anything on youtube without anyone checking your form.

PickAChew · 13/12/2020 23:02

Do you do the pelvic tilts? I find that they really work and I do them unconsciously, now. The knee exercises were awful, though. Made my knees clunk uncomfortably, leaving me a bit queasy.

fairydustandpixies · 13/12/2020 23:03

Me! Had it for 30yrs and have tried everything going but nothing has worked. I've got another MRI this week and I've finally been given the go ahead for fusion surgery.
