Fridge making alcohol taste weird

We have recently moved into a new build house with a brand new fridge freezer. We had a couple of bottles of Budweiser the other day and both commented on an unpleasant after taste.

So as an experiment (obvs) we tried two more bottles the following night, and they tasted the same.

I didn't think much more of it until I had a tin of gin and tonic a couple of days later, and it had the exact same after taste.

I'm now having a cider and can taste it again!

It only seems to be alcohol as cans and bottles of coke have been fine!

Any ideas what it could be?!

Are you sure it's not your taste buds? Seems odd as the alcohol is fully sealed in glass! If you look at the mystery with a philosophy called Occam's Razor in mind, the simplest answer is always the right answer.

Is it A. Likely that your new fridge is emitting some wonder-gas that's seeping through glass and into only alcohol or

B that the alcohol is off or your taste buds are off

The answer would be B

Any chance you're pregnant?

Have you got Covid?!

Maybe worth trying the same drink that hasn’t been in the fridge and seeing if it tastes the same.

Oh god I hadn't thought of covid.

Both of us can taste it so seems a coincidence, but I know I sound crazy!

My first thought was Covid, not fridge - sorry

PoppyOppy · 12/12/2020 08:56

I'd get a test. For both of you. If it were just you then I’d be thinking pregnant but both of you...

JemimaTiggywinkle · 12/12/2020 08:59

Yes, definitely get a covid test. It wouldn’t be much of a coincidence for you both to have covid if you live together.

I saw a news article recently where loads of people were complaining to Yankee candle that their candles had no smell... turned out they all had covid.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/12/2020 09:09

Perhaps it's just running significantly colder or warmer than your old fridge, that could make some difference to your perception of the taste.
The only other plausible explanation (other than covid or other illness - it's not the only one to alter taste and smell) is that the glasses are picking up some sort of taint.

midnightstar66 · 12/12/2020 09:11

Have you tried tasting the drinks without putting them in the fridge? (Maybe not now at 9am) 😆. Leave them somewhere cold then some in the fridge and compare

midnightstar66 · 12/12/2020 09:12

Also are you decanting the drinks or drinking from the bottle/can?

MushMonster · 12/12/2020 09:13

It can be covid indeed

whichwallywhere · 12/12/2020 09:15

I thought covid too.

midnightstar66 · 12/12/2020 09:17

The thing with covid is not everyone experiences identical symptoms at the same time and it's both OP and DH, also it seems limited to the alcohol and nothing else. I'm holding out for the process of elimination experiment!

Have you checked for carbon monoxide in your home? Have you tried the same product from another location, eg fresh from the supermarket ( due to not being able to go to pubs or other peoples houses). Or even try a can by leaving it outside your door, its cold enough outside.
