I've always equated salary with success (i know i shouldnt) and used my parents as a benchmark
surpassed DMs salary aged 22 and have yet to surpass DFs (6 figures)

Eek probably never!

Ffsnosexallowed · 11/12/2020 19:15

You are odd

AtTheWinchester · 11/12/2020 19:16

Do you earn enough for one of these? Biscuit

HopeYourHighHorseBucks · 11/12/2020 19:16

Bet it's fun at your house

AppleKatie · 11/12/2020 19:16

I’ve surpassed my mums but I’ve no idea what my dad earns it’s possible but I really can’t be sure.

piglet81 · 11/12/2020 19:16

That’s a bit weird. I don’t even know how much my parents earn...

BabyLlamaZen · 11/12/2020 19:17

Never will. Very different career paths. I'm happy with that.

Also pretty offensive op. A banker more successful than a doctor then I take it. Purely based on salary.

AppleKatie · 11/12/2020 19:17

(I don’t equate salary with success but I do think it’s an interesting question from a sociological POV which is why I’m not jumping on the snippy bandwagon

reducingfootprint · 11/12/2020 19:18

my family are all career people so didnt realise this may be weird!!

OP posts:
reducingfootprint · 11/12/2020 19:18

@BabyLlamaZen no, just my own personal success

OP posts:
theresagiantonthebeach · 11/12/2020 19:18

I have never known what my parents earnt

SummerHouse · 11/12/2020 19:19

Not sure I could accurately say what I get paid let alone my parents. But what the three salaries have to do with each other, I know not.

HopeYourHighHorseBucks · 11/12/2020 19:19

I dont know how much they earn, could probably guess but we dont talk figures

tectonicplates · 11/12/2020 19:19

I'm shocked that you know what your parents' salaries are. I've never been told and would never be rude enough to ask.

BabyLlamaZen · 11/12/2020 19:20

There are a wide range of careers. What is your limit then op? Will you ever feel happy or accomplished?

reducingfootprint · 11/12/2020 19:21

@tectonicplates money shouldnt be a taboo topic, it was an open discussion growing up, it taught me about earning, savings and pensions

OP posts:
allfurcoatnoknickers · 11/12/2020 19:21

Surpassed my mum at 27 and my dad at 28. The huge income disparity between us has caused no end of problems :(

HeadNorth · 11/12/2020 19:22

I've no idea what my dear late dad earned. My mum was a teacher, so I guess I earn more than she did - but she did a great and worthwhile job for over 30 years. Some things can't be measured by money. OP, you sound like someone who knows the price of everything & value of nothing.

reducingfootprint · 11/12/2020 19:23

@BabyLlamaZen yes - there is a limit, i have a job role in mind and regularly make sure i am on track to reach that

I was also taught about earning, savings and pensions. It's possible to learn about that stuff without knowing your parents' salaries. This really is one of those "Only on Mumsnet" threads. 😂

reducingfootprint · 11/12/2020 19:24

@HeadNorth no, i know the value of things, money was regularly discussed growing up and parents pushed me to earn to my full potential to give myself and dc the best life possible

We have equalled my parents income before they bought a business - we were about 38 I think. My Dad was a similar age when he hit that amount. They are technically millionaires now with the business they own and we aren't at that point sadly!

DoThePropeller · 11/12/2020 19:24

I am with you OP, money shouldn’t be taboo within your immediate family!

I surpassed my Dad by the time I was 21 but I’ll probably never exceed my Mum - she’s a very high earner in finance.

MsTSwift · 11/12/2020 19:24

Weird thread. Both parents teachers and I did corporate law in the City so probably 25? Their jobs far more worthwhile though.

GrasswillbeGreener · 11/12/2020 19:25

My sister and I both earned more than our father's maximum salary before he was forced to take early retirement, in our first year out of university. Me as a doctor, her on a one year orchestra contract prior to moving to the UK. What made this really sad was that our father was a gifted electrical and electronics engineer with two masters degrees. But he wasn't a good communicator and had a very unsatisfying career.

(I haven't sustained my income though, career was derailed after I had my children and I'm doing other things now)
