Terrible hormonal headaches - anyone know anything that helps?

I get terrible hormonal headaches around my period and ibuprofen, paracetamol, drinking lots of water does not help.

Resting in a quiet dark room would help - but being a single parent to 4 young children that ain't happening. I also don't get enough sleep - which also doesn't help but is impossible to change right now.

Does anyone else suffer and have any ideas which might help?

Peri menopausal here and my headaches have got worse around the time my period is due.

I swear by Agnus Castus (herbal hormone regulator) and Magnesium for managing hormonal symptoms generally. And all the already-mentioned OTC painkillers.

Oh my goodness I thought it was just me. Age 44 and for 2 years now since peri symptoms started I get awful sinuses headaches at time of month. Takes 2-3 days out of each month.

I’ve had hormonal migraines all my life, however since I hit my forties they just got ridiculous- a horrific migraine at the start of every period, time off work etc. I went to the GP initially who prescribed triptans- these did not work for me, in fact they made me worse. Then I had a chance conversation with a friend who said she’d had exactly the same problem until a nurse had recommended the mini pill. So I went back to a different & more helpful GP who said it’s not a conventional cure for hormonal migraine but definitely worth a try. And I haven’t looked back! I do still occasionally get headaches but only if I’m very tired or ill. No migraines since starting on the mini pill 2 years ago- and even better no periods either!! I know it’s not for everyone- my DH wasn’t keen as he’d had the snip so I didn’t have to be on the pill (oestrogen based does not agree with me!) but the mini pill has changed my life. Interestingly the useful GP that I saw the second time said if the mini pill didn’t work then to come back as they have various other things to try- definitely worth making an appointment.

This thread has been so informative as I’ve been struggling with headaches for a while now. Can anyone that was given amitriptyline tell me how long it takes to look start working please? I’ve been taking 10mg nightly for a week.

@BewareTheBeardedFatMan

I'm not much of a drinker - but I don't drink at all if I feel a headache coming on because I know that makes it loads worse. I definitely couldn't give up dairy... I've just gone veggie, vegan is currently a step too far for me.

I might try magnesium, and definitely some of the over the counter meds until I can speak to a GP. Unfortunately dd is self isolating currently, and as she is just 6 this mean I effectively am too so no chance of popping out to pick anything up tomorrow. Crap.

I get really bad tension headaches from work stress and Amazon have loads of stuff on there that has helped, tiger balms, a migraine hat (cold therapy) and OTC meds if you can’t get out
