ASDA - closing on Boxing Day

ASDA (and some other retailers) are going to be closed on Boxing Day to give their staff a break and a thank you for work over the pandemic. Great idea.

But this was mentioned in the BBC article:

'Frontline staff will also get 100% of their bonus entitlement regardless of whether they have reached sales quotas.'

Supermarket staff have sales quotas? How does that work? They aren't on the shop floor trying to upsell items. Is it number of customers processed?

When i worked for asda ages ago boxing day was very much a choice to work and i know at least a few people who jumped at the chance to work due to loneliness etc. Not everyone is happy with the news. Saying that it would be nice for them to have a proper break with family or themselves

So if that day the store is now closed, and a member of staff has taken that day as annual leave, I assume it will be given back to them.

We've had to take Christmas day as annual leave if it falls on your day to work, even though its a public holiday and the store shuts.

Night staff still have to go in on boxing day night

If they were open Boxing Day would they have had to go in Christmas Day night?

No, if the want the day off then they have to take it as annual leave. Otherwise they go in. All they've done is close the store meaning more people are able to take annual leave.

No idea whether people are being forced to take it if their staff group isn't needed or is they'd find other work for them to do.

No, if the want the day off then they have to take it as annual leave.

Presumably, if they have no more annual leave they'll have to make up the hours at some other point in the working week, or sacrifice the pay. Hardly the great coup for workers in the end.

ratspeaker · 13/12/2020 19:51

I have a relative working for Asda.
If they are due to be in as part of their regular work schedule they have to use annual leave to get Boxing Day off.
But if they work it they should get double time but may get sent home early and only be paid for hours worked, so they've been told.

Serena1977 · 13/12/2020 21:09

At Asda for boxing day, if it's your normal day to work you have to book a holiday day or be unpaid or go for your normal shift and shelf stack.

IT IS NOT A GIFT FROM ASDA.
