Which job should I take?

I've (luckily) been offered two positions this week and I'm unsure on which one to take. I won't say what the role is exactly as it may be outing.

Job 1
2 days per week term time only (18h over Monday & Wednesday)
Childcare (2oy & 1yo) would be covered by family
Pay is ok
15mins down the road
Didn't click with one of the people there and not sure how long term/secure it would be.
Slightly different to any roles I've had previously
Great holidays
Good short term for our family but potentially less job satisfaction for me

Job 2
2.5 days a week (23h over Wednesday & Fridays with a few hours on a Monday)
The awkward few hours on a Monday would mean the kids going to nursery for 2 sessions each a week as a minimum, which on a positive side note would mean I'd gain a child free morning Grin
But this would mean my take home pay would be less than Job 1 UNTIL DS1 gets his free hours in Sept, then it would increase
I feel like nursery would be a positive for DS1 in particular as he's dying to socialise more (thanks covid)
Long term position
Felt like a good fit for me personally but more to manage over the week with the kids

I'm going back and forth and need to make a decision ASAP really. Help!

The second one! Sounds great.

YoureNotOnTheList · 09/12/2020 20:37

From the way you've written your post, you obviously prefer the second one. So take that one!

YoureNotOnTheList · 09/12/2020 20:37

Or flip a coin. You'll know immediately by your reaction.

Job 2 - September will be here in no time.

You’ll love the few hours of child free time too and the experience will be good for DS.

Well done!

saywhatwhatnow · 09/12/2020 20:39

Forgot to say job 2 is 40 mins commute Confused

2nd. You’ve presented that much more positively. Short term pain for long term gain makes sense.

Well done getting two job offers!

ureterr1blemuriel · 09/12/2020 20:42

Stick the radio one and enjoy the 40 mins quiet time Smile

M0rT · 09/12/2020 20:43

Job 2 as it's long term and you would enjoy it more.
Would it be more beneficial in securing your next job? If the commute becomes too difficult you could look to move in a few years and that might be easier from Job 2 than Job 1.

WineIsMyCarb · 09/12/2020 20:44

Job 2 is better for your children, particularly in the long term; part-time nursery is best of both worlds, mum has more scope to develop her career so can better provide for her children, children can have a couple of hours at family members on the odd afternoon as you won't have "used up" your childcare goodwill whilst at work!!

Bogardicia · 09/12/2020 20:46

Shame about the commute for job 2, but it still sounds like that would be the best option for you. But I would be tempted by one for the ease of commute and holidays...

DianaT1969 · 09/12/2020 20:57

Job 2. Even the 40 mins commute is child free time when you can read a book or listen to music (depending if train or car).

CoffeeRunner · 09/12/2020 21:00

Job 2. You won’t notice the extra hours if you really enjoy the job.

Whereas two days in a job you aren’t so keen on could feel like a full week.

saywhatwhatnow · 09/12/2020 21:45

I'm so surprised it's a clean sweep for 2. DH thinks 1 is the best option.

I think the 2nd one too. Why does he think the first one? Confused

It's insecure, short term, not a brilliant fit for you, doesn't really meet your needs, and leaves you reliant on family for childcare. What's the appeal?!

Spied · 09/12/2020 21:58

Will you be the one picking up dc if poorly at nursery?
I'd personally be swayed by the local job 15 mins down the road but it does sound like the second one is where your heart lies.

saywhatwhatnow · 09/12/2020 22:22

I think with fuel and nursery fees I wouldn't be taking much more money home even in the long term with job2. And yes job1 is easier for him. There is no worry about nursery at all with 1, he will do one day childcare and my parents the other day, plus I get lots of holidays too.

If DCS are poorly we would have to split time off between us.

Def number 2! If job one was long term / secure it might be worth if for convenience, but as it's not, go for 2!

blueshoes · 10/12/2020 02:02

Think long term. Job 2.

FridayWineTime · 10/12/2020 02:06

Of course number 2. A 40 min commute is quite typical.

Bit bemused by your DH...?

Oblomov20 · 10/12/2020 02:08

Job 2.
Dh? Hmm

ImNotMeImSomeoneElse · 10/12/2020 03:28

Job 2.

Tink1990 · 10/12/2020 05:29

I would be swayed by the 15 mins down the road aspect and great holidays you mentioned tbh Blush

riotlady · 10/12/2020 05:52

2

surlycurly · 10/12/2020 05:58

I think you have to take the one that's better for your career. If anything ever happened, and you ended up alone, which one allows you to get back into a full time position more easily? Kids don't stay wee forever!

Changeismyname · 10/12/2020 05:58

Job 2 without a doubt
