Good luck traditions/superstitions for the nee year

Hi all,

Iv literally had the worst luck for about the last four years, everything from serious family illness, family death, sleep deprivation for two solid years, major financial issues, employment harassment, pets being injured, put on tones of weight and let myself go a bit......a lot.......

I need motivation and possibly an exorcism on myself and the house.

I was just thinking about good luck traditions like horse shoes, coal etc and would like as many as possible so I can do loads to start the new year off.

I know most I'd just mind set so if anyone has those too let me know!

(Can't hurt can't it ?)

I have a welding test piece, which I rub for luck on occasion. It was the first object I put into DD's hand when she was born.

Shinyletsbebadguys · 09/12/2020 14:33

I'll follow this. I'm not usually superstitious but at this point I'll hedge my bets. As you say OP can't hurt im drawing the line if anyone suggest dancing naked round anything though its cold

I’m Scottish so Hogmanay has had many superstations passed down. Do not do any housework or washing on New Year’s Day or you’ll wash Luck away (or wash someone from your life) hence why Hogmanay was a s pop shy
Cleaning the house till it shone. Do you know any tall men? get them to first foot and be the first over your door. When the bells found open the back door and let 2020 out and then open the front door to let 2021 in.

We do first footing. A family member is banished outside just before midnight with coal, a coin and a bottle of booze in order to be the first person back across the threshold after midnight.

I think traditionally it should be a tall dark haired man, but we ignore that bit as I think it is sexist.

twittwootwittwoo · 09/12/2020 19:15

I've never heard of first footing that's something nee we ll do

Open front door to let the New Year in.

Kiss your darling first and you'll still be together at the end of the year.

(Also Scottish and keep to these two. Gave up on spending Hogmanay cleaning the hoose!)

Seems it's only Scotland who has these traditionals lol but they're great

Italians have a bowl of Lentil Soup on New Years Eve to guarantee wealth. (the lentil look like pennies)
Chinese have noodles for a long life.

Keep the Christmas mistletoe hanging in a corner all year then burn on the following 12th night when it's place is taken by the new bunch.

Protects the home and brings good luck and good fortune

Disneyinmyveins · 10/12/2020 20:32

Dark haired person to first foot you with a lump of coal wrapped in silver
Clean the whole house to remove the old year
Leave the windows open to allow the old year out and the new year in.
If the house is a mess in New Year's Day it will stay that way the whole year Blush

Disneyinmyveins · 10/12/2020 20:33

Northern Irish here and very superstitious 🤣

Yes to cleaning on Hogmanay especially your doorstep.
Also tradition to sing songs, do a ‘turn’ on Hogmanay.
This was when we had big family gatherings so not applicable this year.

Tall, dark handsome man ( or if none are available, any man will do) to first foot after the bells at midnight.
Traditionally tall, dark handsome man should present a lump of coal but in our family it’s usually whisky and shortbread.
This is supposed to bring good luck for the New Year.

We do lentils with sausages in my family - still haven't got any richer sadly.

We also wear red for luck on New Years Eve.

That actually happened to me. Horse was a total pigsty on Ne’er day and I just never seemed to get on top of it...since then when it’s been clean I seem to hard been able to keep it tidy all year. Maybe a mindset
