Please help!
I have been looking at the IKEA kallax and the Argos squares plus. Both similar size and price. IKEA want £40 delivery so I'm thinking of driving but not looking forward to a massive queue and having to wait with a 2 year old. Argos is on my doorstep.
Are IKEA better quality than the Argos? Seen a few bad reviews of the Argos and people saying to go for the IKEA instead.
Also I don't know what size to go for? Son's room is only very small. Do I go for the unit that is three squares high or four squares high? I was thinking if I get the three high I can still put toys on the top of it but a four would be too high? Looks like IKEA don't do a three square high unit though.

I should have said but then there’s also good reviews of the Argos units too.

Definitely Kallax. Ikea do a 3 x 4 kallax which will be low enough for toys on top. You can also pop a 2x4 vertically and put a 2x2 on top of that and it is very sturdy, they can be secured to the wall too and then you have space for a bookshelf next to it if you need one.

PinkDaydreams · 08/12/2020 10:06

Thank you for the reply! Unfortunately the 3x4 will be too big :(
I haven’t described very well sorry, either 3 high two wide or four high two wide. Honestly not sure which to go for.

What about a 2x2 and a 1x2 kallax on top? Then you can always put wall shelves above assuming the walls can have things fixed to them.

PinkDaydreams · 08/12/2020 10:27

I hadn’t thought of that.
For anyone that’s got the kallax, I’ve had the tape measure out looking at the four high two wide but just can’t vision it. Is it really high, too high for a toddlers bedroom? Obviously I’ll be securing it to the wall.
I’m panicking as house isn’t big, done a clear out of toys before Xmas, but I know he’s getting lots of train tracks for Xmas and birthday so need somewhere to put it! Under the bed storage will be going shortly as I’ll be taking the sides off his cotbed and the bed then lowers down so no space under it anymore :(

IKEA quality is much better than Argos. The cubes are bigger as well I think. My parents have a 4x2 but on its side - it is big. It's about 2 metres isn't it? That would be almost to the ceiling in our new build.

Not to confuse things further but have you looked at the Trofast? The storage boxes are a bit smaller so a bit less rummaging through for toys (the boxes in the Kallax are huge!).

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 08/12/2020 12:20

What about the 2x2 kallax? Keep it low down and simple. Add a little 2xdrawer set into one square, and one or two pull out baskets. Leave the last square for larger toys to sit on.

Then get a second 2x2 and put it downstairs or in the living room for other toys (fancier baskets in it).

Having two smaller ones means they are more versatile in the house and can be swapped round or added together easier. Plus, having all the toys away in the bedroom is a bit of a hindrance I found. The kids drag them into the living room to play with so it made sense to us to have a small bit of storage there.

Can always swap the contents round on a monthly basis so that there's "fresh" toys on rotation.

And you can use the tops of both of them if needed.

I'm not keen on the trofast, I don't know why I don't like it.
That's my thought, that the 4 will be too high. I'm a bit funny and wouldn't like a 2x2 with a 1x2 on top as it wouldn't be a full unit, I'm weird like that!

Unfortunately have no space in the living room for a unit. Currently have baskets in the living room that I rotate every couple of days with different toys.

Suppose it depends what you mean by too high. Obviously you'll have to get the boxes down for him. Are you worried that it'll just look too overbearing in the room?

That's exactly it! That it'll look like so much furniture in his room.

We will probably get him one of those mid sleeper beds with storage/drawers underneath but I think the age is 4. He's 3 in Jan so not quite old enough yet.

We have managed to get the kallax units underneath a mid sleeper bed in my sons room we have 2 of the 2x2 ones although not all of them have the cubes in them as we use it as a bookshelf. My son moved up to the mid sleeper bed at age 4 and the it generates a lot of storage space. We have filled them with all his wooden train tracks and cars. Didn't look at the Argos ones but we live near an Ikea. I didn't want the higher kallax as I wanted him to be able to access his toys.

Muddybuddy · 08/12/2020 15:01

The 4x2 Kallax put vertically is quite overbearing in a small room I would say. I have one but in a bigger room.

Muddybuddy · 08/12/2020 15:09

Also, I wouldn’t advise stacking kallax units, they never look quite right as the outside edges are much thicker than the inside ones and therefore it looks odd if they’re stacked

PinkDaydreams · 08/12/2020 15:25

Ok so it looks like I'll have to got for the 2x2 kallax.
I'll leave the Argos one as the general feeling is that IKEA is better quality.
