What lunch box? Plimsolls?

We've just arrived from overseas after our move being delayed for 9 months due to Covid-19. I've just found out that my 9-year-old has a school place (yay) and I'm trying to organize uniform online as we are in quarantine in a Tier 3 area. I'm looking at my school list and it states 'plimsolls' for indoor PE. Do you think they mean those canvas things? Or do they mean trainers? When I was at school it was only infants that wore plimsolls
Also, lunchboxes, can anyone recommend a good lunchbox - I guess themed ones are social suicide for a 9-year-old? Neither of my children have ever been to school in the UK.

Sorry for my stupid questions - I'm all over the place. We've shipped a dog over as well, trying to get organized, new schools to organise, Christmas aaargh!

Plimsolls are those canvas shoes. Sizing is funny, so try local large supermarket.

Lunch boxes can be anything from a plastic box, a paper bag, the latest Harry potter/Minecraft/Fortnite design... Again try local supermarket. Plain could be better until he sees what other boys in his year have.

Plimsolls are the canvas and rubber black shoes.
You can buy them everywhere, here are some from Asda

For lunch boxes we’ve always gone for Sistema lunch boxes with the multiple compartments as they are very useful.

DS now uses a stackable bamboo bento style lunchbox.

I'd get black trainers if I were you. I got plimsolls for DD as per letter and the TA pulled me to ask to buy trainers. I bought sparkle skechers cos DD's 5 and I was hopping mad at being asked to buy 2 things.

Lunchbox, anything they like. :)
But the trainers, and if any questions plimsolls are usually £20 cheaper, and your DC can use trainers for home.

Can you go on the community facebook page for your area and say hello and ask the school mums on there your questions?

Plimsolls are the canvas things yes. Always on the list but never worn by older children who hate them in my experience! I no longer bother. But they are inexpensive if you don't want to risk it.

Welcome back!

Sistema lunch cubes are very good. Character lunch boxes or bags tend to be fine, although Smiggle is very popular in schools. I got my sons in a sale as it's expensive.

Be prepared for things getting lost, teachers don't have the time to look really, so cheaper uniform, hats, gloves, water bottles are the way to go and label everything with a black sharpie!

My ds hasn't worn the indoor plimsolls at all for the last couple of years despite me buying them. They mean the black cheap ones with no laces.

My ds is 10 and stopped having the themed lunch boxes a couple of years ago as they were too babyish. We use the Tupperware boxes. The school are insistent on these at the moment anyway as they are more hygienic (easily washable - COVID).

Pascha · 08/12/2020 07:55

We have the clear sistema lunchboxes too, this one and my boys chose a lunch bag for it with handle and bottle holder this one

Mine haven't worn plimsolls since reception age. They wear plain black trainers. Each school is different about this though so I do advise asking first.

mamamia2020 · 08/12/2020 08:06

My son has size 8.5 feet and really wide. I struggle enough with shoes so I think I'd struggle to find plimsolls as they seem to be made for younger kids with smaller feet.

@Pascha
Is your child supposed to have separate indoor and outdoor trainers?

Oh and be aware that depending on where you live they aren't called plimsolls, they are daps or pumps, or numerous other names that will no doubt appear shortly...

No, never been asked of us. However right now because the kids are being expected to have breaktime outside come rain or shine and have to use the field to allow access for all class bubbles, they have wellies or old trainers to change into so they don't ruin their school shoes.

dixiedo · 08/12/2020 09:21

My children pre covid had to take two bags, a games kit with tracksuit / trainers and then a P.E kit with plimsolls (we call them pumps here 🤷🏻‍♀️)
My DS is yr5 and has a fortnite lunchbag thing. He had a plain box last year but happy with the fortnite one.

purringpaws · 08/12/2020 09:25

Ring the school and ask them for clarification on shoes

LER83 · 08/12/2020 09:32

I would ask on a local fb group to be honest as it really does vary school to school! My ds is 10, he takes a sistema lunchbox with all the compartments, as does dd who is 8. At the moment they have to wear their pe kit to school so they are just wearing normal trainers. Normally they are supposed to have plimsolls for indoor pe and white or black trainers for outdoor pe. I just buy plimsolls and trainers for them to leave in school, then its down to them what they want to wear. Most themed stuff stopped about year 4. Its all adidas/nike/superdry/hype etc in my eldests year 🙄
