Will I get bank charges for going £1 into unauthorised overdraft?

This isn’t a begging thread, I’ve got savings in a separate account but it takes a few days to transfer over, and cash I could go and pay in tomorrow if needed but it will depend on the queue size weather I’d have time to do this.

I have a bill going out a day earlier than expected and it will take me to -£1.15. I get paid Thursday so it’ll only be for one day. Will I get charged for going over by so little. It’s with HSBC.

not sure about hsbc but my bank doesn't charge if its under a fiver. if you go to online banking it should tell you

Probably. However if you've not dipped over the line in the previous year or so you could ring and argue your case.
Otherwise go into a bank and pay in £1.15 or whatever it is you need to in cash. Or find someone to transfer cash for you.

Most banks have a buffer on their overdrafts before they start charging. It will be in the terms and conditions of the account which you'll be able to find on their website.

HSBC have never charged us when we've accidentally gone overdrawn by a tenner or so. They send a text to tell you off advise you, but always say "You have not been charged this time".

According to this, you're fine for up to £25:

Depends on the bank I suppose.

A few years back I got charged £35 for transaction -I’ve had 2 of them so £70.
My mistake but checked the account before the purchase and money were there except the account hasn’t been charged for what I bought the previous day.
I was offered overdraft by the bank and declined it so need to control my spending.

Yorkshire bank charged me when I was just a small amount overdrawn for a short period. I rang them and asked them to waive the charges as it wasn’t a usual occurrence and they did.

BarbaraofSeville · 08/12/2020 05:34

You'll have to check the charging scheme for your bank, they're all different.

Can you go online and ask for an overdraft facility? I got one approved instantly when I had a similar cashflow issue with money tied up in a savings account. I didn't use it in the end and behave like it doesn't exist, but it's still there and stops any unexpected payments being unauthorised and spoiling my record with the bank.

But I thought they didn't make charges any more, which is why they've increased the interest rate to 40% instead, which is good in your case because the interest on a small amount for a short period of time is nothing, just expensive for people who constantly run a large overdraft.

Or can you send the money from another account or ask a friend or relative to do it, the money goes instantly with faster payments

LordEmsworth · 08/12/2020 06:26

No. HSBC don't charge overdraft fees anymore. www.hsbc.co.uk/current-accounts/products/overdrafts/

I'm with HSBC and they allow you to go up to £25 without charges
