Don't like Turkey, Turkey gravy, roast potatoes, Brussels, cabbage, carrots, prawns, salmon, posh cheese, wine, stollen, xmas cake..

I should be slim but I'm not

I struggle with what to eat every year

I think Christmas dinner is a bit dull there really is nowhere to hide when the food is that plain. So it can be hit or miss. We don’t do turkey because that’s always a miss - we’ll have chicken instead but sometimes beef rib or a fillet - have done Indian style, Italian style - one year when the kids were small and were going through a pasta stage we had tomato pasta. We do go all out with the cheese though - usually a special trip to NEAL’s Yard Dairy a couple of days before Christmas. And we always have prawn cocktail.

SlothWithACloth · 08/12/2020 05:53

i hate turkey too and all the mince pies and dried fruit stuff.
Love all the veg and cheese and crackers though.

Graciebobcat · 08/12/2020 06:03

I don't like some of it. Don't eat meat now and was never a big turkey fan. Don't like Quality Street, York Fruits, egg nog, advocaat, mince pies, Christmas cake, anything with cloves or tons of cinnamon in.

Do like: Lindor, stilton, champagne, chestnuts, nutty stuffing, smoked salmon/prawn/mushroom canapés, stollen, trifle.

My big lad (20) is on the spectrum and the closest we can get him to earring Christmas food is Christmas tree shaped chicken nuggets and pigs in blankets... and I'm delighted with that coz he never used to manage that.
Just eat what makes you happy and enjoy it, there's no rules on what you should or shouldn't have.

Graciebobcat · 08/12/2020 06:06

And Christmas veg. Sprouts, parnsips, carrots, roast potatoes. Yum.

sashh · 08/12/2020 06:25

I got the MOW options today, turkey, pork or 'fish in parsley sauce', no mention of which fish.

You don't have to have Xmas food, you can eat what you want. A friend of a friend has shepherd's pir because it is her favourite.

AlizarinRed · 08/12/2020 06:57

Modern brussel sprouts have a much milder flavour imv. I think it's a loss but it means people shouldn't mind eating them so much.
Try them.

Bluntness100 · 08/12/2020 07:00

What do you mean you struggle with what to eat each year? How old are you, how many Xmas’S as an adult? Surely you know what you like and make sure you have that instead?

Sparklingbrook · 08/12/2020 07:06

I hate anything with candied peel. Rules out quite a bit of Christmas food. Mulled wine-bleurgh who needs warm wine?
We never have Christmas dinner because nobody in the house likes it. We just have a full fridge of stuff we like and that's it.

Big no to the grease-fest that is marketed as 'party food' too. teeny tiny mouthfuls of god knows what!

I am having a Christmas Dinner at work on Friday. Sad

zigaziga · 08/12/2020 07:17

I hate all of it (but love Christmas). I especially hate raisins and sultanas and that sort of thing and it’s in everything this time of year. I won’t even take a bite of Christmas cake / pudding etc.
I don’t think that’s that unusual? I think there’s a reason why most of the year the shops sell way more of other type of cakes than fruit cake! It’s not what most people choose as a treat when they have the choice.

zigaziga · 08/12/2020 07:18

My grandparents and aunts and uncles I recall always have beef on Christmas Day.. can’t stand the Turkey.

RusholmeRuffian · 08/12/2020 07:25

I don't like it either. We'll probably have a curry.

Empressofthemundane · 08/12/2020 09:22

I’m originally from America. We have a free choice there and Xmas dinner is not always formal. People have already had a formulaic turkey dinner in Kate November.

That said, I do a traditional British turkey Xmas. My husband and kids love it.

I make a Xmas cake but don’t eat it. I buy a Xmas pudding, but don’t eat it. I find Brussels sprouts meh. It’s a so-so dinner for me. Boxing Day is a lot more fun.

ssd · 08/12/2020 10:08

I make a Turkey crown and the trimmings as dh and DS 1 like it, ds2 isn't as keen though and usually has a bit of chicken instead. Don't know what I'll have. The nachos further up sounds great. I guess I make the Turkey to make the day more special, theres only ever the 4 of us so I try to make it a bit better.

It's all just a faff though.

I don't like roast dinners at all. I much rather a turkey, cheese and mayo sandwich Christmas night with a packet of crisps. Grin

Bluesheep8 · 08/12/2020 10:39

My brothers girlfriend doesn’t like roast dinner, only thing she likes is the Yorkshire’s. So she pretty much sits with a face on all day

Yorkshire puddings? With Christmas dinner? Or are they with roast beef?
