If you live overseas, which shops do you miss the most? What items do you wish you could buy?

I was just thinking about this today, with not being able to travel, all the shops I miss going to.

OP posts:

Waitrose. That's pretty much it. I also miss Abel & Cole.

ImRealHonest · 07/12/2020 20:08

I have waitrose. But I miss B&M and dunelm. And George clothes for decent quality work stuff

FatCatThinCat · 07/12/2020 20:11

None really. We can everything we want here. That might change next year if UK shop top online deliveries to the EU.

FatCatThinCat · 07/12/2020 20:12
  • if the UK shops stop online deliveries

No idea where that first illiterate effort came from.

InTheLongGrass · 07/12/2020 20:12

I missed:
A decent bookshop (physical or online)
Dunelm

And I used to buy long length trousers and bras each time I visited the UK.

Strokethefurrywall · 07/12/2020 20:15

Marks & Spencers
Dunelm
IKEA (although we can order it in from USA, but not the same as wandering around one!)

LilyTheSavage · 07/12/2020 20:18

I miss Waitrose, John Lewis, M&S and a good bookshop.

davekim · 07/12/2020 20:33

Boots, and Holland and Barratts.

And Asda/Tyne chease for vegan food.

That's it really.

Can you use the book depository? They deliver for free here (nonEU) regardless of £ spent. I bloody love them, as English books are so expensive here and not a massive variety
Purplekitchen · 07/12/2020 20:36

I used to miss Waitrose, M&S, and Boots.

MrsT1405 · 07/12/2020 20:36

Mostly supermarkets that stock everything. I live in Spain and a lot of what we get is poor quality old and out of date. The herbs and spices are rubbish as well. You can't just go and buy, basil, for example. They may or may not have it. The veg is great on Friday and off by Monday.

Europilgrim · 07/12/2020 20:37

Waitrose!

NewLevelsOfTiredness · 07/12/2020 20:49

Just bookshops really. In Denmark it felt like there was always an equivalent.

Matas for Boots.
Irma for Waitrose
Bog & Idé for most of what WHSmith did (It's pronounced more like "Bo" than "Bog", in case you're giggling.)

I did feel that the usual Tesco and Sainsburys were a little nicer than their equivalents here, I guess.

I have to pay about £6 for a bottle of salad cream though. Which I do....

LadyAcony · 07/12/2020 20:53

M&S food (can get their other stuff online)
WH Smith like it used to be 25 years ago!
John Lewis
Poundland/B&M Bargains for premium branss at prices you just can’t find here.

VetOnCall · 07/12/2020 20:56

Waitrose
M&S

I adore Canada but the supermarkets are $$$ and nowhere near as good, especially at Christmas 😭

InTheLongGrass · 07/12/2020 21:06

davekim I'm back in the UK now. Yes, we did use book depository, but stuff took 3-4weeks to arrive. Addresses were also problematic. I used to send stuff to DH at work, and had 100% sucess rate.
A friend used her residential address, and probably lost half her orders.

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 07/12/2020 21:07

Waitrose. Particularly their low fat vanilla custard. And anywhere that sells decent sausage rolls, pork pies and Scotch eggs.

lonelySam · 07/12/2020 21:10

Abel & Cole. Graze (not a shop, I know). Waterstones. Sainsbury's. Boot's. Costa (much better than Starbucks imho). JL. All Saints.

LightDrizzle · 07/12/2020 21:11

John Lewis. Middle class catnip!

hapagirl · 07/12/2020 21:12

I’m back in the UK now but was in Asia for 10 years. I missed Boots! Even now, having been back for 7 years, I feel happy to walk into a Boots.

Serenschintte · 07/12/2020 21:13

Waitrose. A big Supermarket where you can get everything you need instead of going to a couple of different shops.
M&S food hall
Hobbs.

DonnaHaywood · 07/12/2020 21:18

Also in Spain, and like MrsT1405 I miss the range in supermarkets. The fresh fruit and vegetables are really good in ours to be fair, but it's very hit and miss on fresh herbs. I also want to be able to buy pharmacy items like paracetamol and basic clothing/underwear at the supermarket.

On the plus side we currently have access to a huge variety of turrón!

DonnaHaywood · 07/12/2020 21:20

Poor punctuation - I don't consider clothing to be a pharmacy item! It seems the range in UK supermarkets is frequently missed though.

Longtalljosie · 07/12/2020 21:24

M&S
Waitrose
John Lewis
Monsoon
Next (online deliver but being able to go in and try on)
Boots

Morret · 07/12/2020 22:33

Living back in UK now, but I missed waterstones at the time, being able to browse an English language bookshop would of been heaven.
Pubs, tesco and cheap random shops, pound land/stretchers, the aisle of junk in lidl type thing.
Hobbycraft.
