Jelly layer in trifle?

DD wants to make a chocolate orange trifle with brownies on the bottom and a layer of orange jelly above.

Is this possible? Won’t the liquid jelly just soak into the brownies before it has a chance to set?

If you have a cake pan, pour it in there about as thick as you like, let it set then cut it to size and tip in the trifle vessel

Every trifle with jelly I have ever had has jelly/fruit on the bottom, then sponge on top, then sherry is added so the sponge soaks it up., followed by custard and cream.

I would make the jelly layer with mandarins, then put the brownies on top once it is set and soak with Cointreau or orange juice.

I pour jelly over the fruit and sponge layer, and it soaks into that and makes that layer quite firm. It's a cause of ongoing debate in our house, as that's my family recipe, but DH comes from a no-jelly in trifle family. Controversial! Grin

Thank you all. Hopefully we manage to create something that lives up to her carefully felt-tipped diagram. Confused

How about making it with jaffa cakes?

Break up a packet of jaffa cakes in the bowl and pour enough orange jelly over to leave plenty of jelly over the top. Make a second adult version where you soak the jaffa cakes with contreau.

Layer of chocolate custard, whipped cream and top with grated Terry's chocolate orange.

These all sound really good and I don't even like trifle! The texture really puts me off but some here don't sound like they'd be too mushy at all.
