I'd say they have a positive outlook, optimistic, joyful, peaceful

PurpleDaisies · 07/12/2020 00:05

I don’t think there’s one way to be happy. Loud, quiet, confident, shy...

I’m interested in why you’re asking.

Missthedog · 07/12/2020 00:10

Deluded?

AllDressedUpForMyselfOnly · 07/12/2020 00:10

One of the guys I work with who is very quite and reserved described me as a happy person. He tends to just get on with his work and I have never noticed him because he likes to be on his own so just surprised he noticed me.

I can be extremely low and upset with stuff going on yet I'd laugh, be loud and bubbly amongst others.
I think a happy person is one who is content with what they have.
A person who isn't negative.

Thickhead · 07/12/2020 01:05

I was frequently described as 'cheerful', 'happy', 'positive' by colleagues when I was at my absolute lowest ebb. I was really insecure and had no self esteem so plastered on a big smile and became a people pleaser, never complaining, putting on a 'bubbly' persona.

Now I have a lot more confidence and inner peace and am more assertive and calm, and less of a smiling doormat. I would say that is real happiness, for me, and I recognise it in others too.

@Thickhead Good for you, it takes a lot to changed from the way you was before. Well done. you have found true peace and happiness.

I know a few people with depression who are loud and bubbly, so no, I would not describe that as a happy person, although it could be. I am quiet, and reserved, but generally happy.

Bloodybridget · 07/12/2020 08:43

All sorts of different personalities can be happy, your post doesn't make sense to me, OP.

thedevilinablackdress · 07/12/2020 08:45

Content with life. Positive.

PolarnOPirate · 07/12/2020 08:46

Could be a variety. The loudest could be the saddest.

I would describe myself as a happy person - actively grateful for what I have, always out and about experiencing things, a calm parent. I've always had an optimistic disposition. I am also in therapy for an eating disorder and on antidepressants to control anxiety. Still think of myself as a happy person though! Even more so now that I'm tackling these issues.

You should have put that context in your thread title or at least the first post because you ask TWO different things. Anyway, I think it means your laughter is loud and can be heard in the office, very smiley, probably an extrovert loud person to say you didn't notice him is quite obnoxious. We'd get no work done if everyone was loud and laughing.

Bumble84 · 07/12/2020 09:13

I don’t think you can make assumptions about how happy people are at all unless you know them very well. As pp have said people paint on a happy face.

For me happiness is internal peace and being content with my lot. Not needing ‘stuff’ and noticing the simple things in life like a gorgeous sunset or the way the trees are growing. Sounds wishy washy but that’s happiness to me.

Outwardly (apart from to my DH) I think I more or less appear the same. I was on anti depressants for almost a year a few years back and as far as I’m aware no one noticed any difference in me but I knew I was at a major low point.

thedevilinablackdress · 07/12/2020 09:29

ah, your update throws it into a different light. Who knows what he meant. What was the context in which it was said?
