Have you got a journey to do on 23 Dec?

The roads are always awful for the Christmas getaway, but at least usually they're staggered from when the schools break up until Christmas Eve.

I can't imagine the gridlock on 23 Dec this year, or are most people deciding not to travel to family this year?

I’m expecting it to be grim. I can’t see how it would be less busier when the people who are travelling will be doing it in 5 days. Normally our travel would be spread over Xmas and new year for example.

We have travelled on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning every year for about 25 years ( except 2019 when family came here ). This year we will be staying at home alone, just the three of us

We're driving from Hertfordshire to SW London on Christmas Eve to see my parents, and coming home again on the evening of Christmas Day. Hopefully. But if any of us (me, DH, DS7) gets even the slightest symptoms or DS's class bubble collapses before the end of term then obviously we'll be staying at home. I've got a small turkey crown in the freezer just in case I end up having to do Christmas lunch for the 3 of us!

I think the traffic could be awful - especially if there is bad weather or a prang on a major route.

It's one of the reasons we're considering a tier appropriate day trip just outside the main concession time

@CallmeAngelina

I wonder how they predict things like that though, especially in a year like this one, where there is no precedent.
By asking people their plans.

Christ no, we're not going anywhere and no one is coming to us. Same each year, not Covid related, we are just anti-social!

We re going to see my mum, sister and grandma on the 23rd and coming back the same day, they ve not met our son and they've all been taking minimal risks as have we so it's a compromise for us as I would regret it if my grandma never got to meet her great grandson as she's 81 now.

We re seeing my fil and bil on Christmas Eve who are also in a tier 3 area like us but they ve been very sensible. DH said to me that he's okay not seeing mils side so that we stick to the 3 household guideline as his mum's side of the family is much bigger and after the traumatic time I had in hospital, he s happy for me to see mine which I m very grateful for.

No travelling for us then, apart from to get the click & collect shopping which is booked for that day. Fingers crossed it's all there, or somebody will have to go to a shop. Might drag the kids round the woods to burn off some energy.

We're not going anywhere or seeing anyone over Xmas.

flipperdoda · 07/12/2020 11:23

I will be, and you've got me me nervous about the traffic now!
