I think of Dahl as main in its own right, apparently it’s a side and I’m weird. Opinions please!

GreyishDays · 06/12/2020 16:28

I think of it as a side I’m afraid.

StarShapedWindow · 06/12/2020 16:33

It’s the main part of the meal for us but I can see it’d work well as a side also

JanewaysBun · 06/12/2020 16:37

Can be either

Finfintytint · 06/12/2020 16:37

A Tarka Dhal is certainly a main. Just a little Otter.

I’ll get my coat.

I'm having dahl for tea (as a main!)

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 06/12/2020 16:40

It's both. Whenever I make it I make enough to freeze, then it's either a side dish to a bit of a spread, or for a midweek fasting friendly tea it's a main with naan for DH.

It's also amazing with grilled salmon as a side, could go that right now actually.

Mumdiva99 · 06/12/2020 16:40

Both. My kids like it for main. My husband for side.

ImaSababa · 06/12/2020 16:43

I thought this was going to be about Roald!

MustardMitt · 06/12/2020 16:45

Normally have it as a main here, with rice and saag aloo as sides.

DramaAlpaca · 06/12/2020 16:46

It's both.

RumJerrySailorRum · 06/12/2020 16:47

What exactly is it please????

GameofPhones · 06/12/2020 16:49

I thought it was going to be about Roald too - he was in the news today (apology from his family for anti-semitic remark).

SlopesOff · 06/12/2020 16:56

It's a side here, however, a main for me, but that's because it is always vegetarian. If there is too much I will put some animal parts in it for those that eat creatures.

msrobot · 06/12/2020 16:58

It can be both but traditionally a main

msrobot · 06/12/2020 16:59

Rumjerrysailorrum - lentil stew

PenelopePiper · 06/12/2020 17:04

@ImaSababa

I thought this was going to be about Roald!
Yea so did I!!
Disfordarkchocolate · 06/12/2020 17:05

Either. I love it, may make some this week.

RumJerrySailorRum · 06/12/2020 17:10

Rumjerrysailorrum - lentil stew
Thanks

I'm clearly tired as I've just realised I know it as daal And didn't make the connection!

ladycarlotta · 06/12/2020 17:11

dhal?

I'd have it as a main for lunch, or a quick dinner, but for a more substantial dinner or if we have people over then I'd serve it alongside one or two more interesting curries.

orangenasturtium · 06/12/2020 17:39

It's a main in India.

I guess the reason people think of it as a side in the UK is because most British Indian restaurants list it as a side dish on the menu. Probably because in the 1950s when they first became common, very few people would have wanted a vegetarian main course and would have thought of a vegetable/vegetable dish as being a side dish. I believe early Indian restaurants in the UK categorised small dishes as starters, vegetable dishes as sides etc to fit with British cultural expectations of a restaurant menu, even if that was not how they were served in India. Plus, if you present the dishes as a starter/side etc because that was people expected to order, they would order more...

PurpleDaisies · 06/12/2020 17:40

We often have it as a main here (vegan and veggie household).

Queenoftheashes · 06/12/2020 17:46

It depends how much you eat.

mandarinpink · 06/12/2020 18:01

I think it's a lunch main, but a dinner side. Realize that sounds ridiculous.

WitchQueenofDarkness · 06/12/2020 18:56

It's a main course here. One of my favourites
