Punishment in schools

Can I have some insight please from parents and teachers. At my DD senior school, year 7, a couple of the pupils were messing around and teachers told the whole year that they were all missing last break for two days. Then because some of the kids tried to avoid this punishment and hid in the toilets, they locked the toilets and told them anyone found in the toilets would be in detention. The whole year weren't abe then to use the toilets between break/lessons, and the toilets are locked during lesson times, then again after school finishes so my child couldn't go to the toilet beyond lunch for two days
What's that all about, is toilet punishment a thing at schools?! I'm going to phone the school tomorrow and wanted to hear other people's opinions or experiences
Just for context my DD has a kidney condition which the school know about

Who gave you this version of events?

I ask because sometimes a child's version will perhaps not be as accurate as it could be (not saying this is the case but it happens all the time).

We've had to lock the toilets at times (never with anyone in them!) due to them being constantly vandalised but the children are allowed to use them at break and lunch (and in an emergency if a child is desperate) as there is a staff member on duty outside them. Our toilets have been broken, sinks and mirrors smashed and shit smeared all over them rendering them unusable anyway. Many schools don't allow toilet visits during lessons as it is considered that that's what break and lunch are for. I'm not saying that's right, it's just the way it is in some schools.

If I were you, I would check with the school in the first instance to find out exactly what happened. It seems very unlikely that a whole year group would be kept in because of a couple of pupils 'messing around'.

Thanks MacDuff - I suspect it's not as awful as it sounded from my DD, albeit she didn't tell me, she mentioned something in passing so I queried her and she told me everything at that point. I'll speak to someone tomorrow to ask, I won't be getting grumpy, but it's concerning if people think they're not able to use the toilets or they'll get detention

You could ask if there's an alternative toilet your dd could use if toilets are locked at lunchtime like last week. I assume there was no one around that your dd could ask at the time.
