Pulp

I've just watched Pulp live at Brixton Academy on Sky Arts and it's made me remember just how much I loved them.
Perfect 90s pop music - halls of residence and indie club nights. Feeling very warm, fuzzy, nostalgic (and old) now.

Please, 90s indie clubbers, reminisce here...where did you go, what did you wear, who did you see in a sweaty little venue where your feet stuck to the floor...oh to be 18 and full of angst again.

Catalonia and Verve.
Never saw Pulp live but would have loved to. And Blur.

Nonagoninfinity · 05/12/2020 21:37

I was a similar Pulp fan, they are one of the bands I've seen the most times (including at Brixton). I'll never forget the 1st time I saw them in 1994 at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. The theatrical setting really suited them and they played an incredible set. I also have many vivid memories of jumping around in fields at various festivals etc. There was always such a feeling of joy and excitement when they played. It felt like a real celebration of geeks taking over the world!

SparePantsAndLego · 05/12/2020 21:42

Pulp are great, most recently we saw them play Hyde Park just after DS was born. It was his first gig! I loved Suede and still do. I spent nearly every weekend seeing bands or in indie clubs. I also worked in a sweaty little venue after my day job. No idea how I managed that, although the lack of sleep was nothing compared to motherhood! They were good days.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/12/2020 21:47

Dp saw Pulp in late 1994. I was heavily pregnant so didn't go. :(

In consolation, I was probably wearing a crushed velvet mini dress, lace tights and eating my body weight in custard slices.

Yourownpersonaljesus · 05/12/2020 21:48

I just caught the end of this. Went to hundreds of gigs in my youth but sadly never saw Pulp live. Saw plenty of other bands at Brixton Academy though - lots of happy memories from there. I used to go to Paramount City in West London (very late 80s/early 90s) and then The Venue in New Cross.

StoorieHoose · 05/12/2020 21:49

I saw Pulp in the Garage in Glasgow and then at Glastonbury in 1994 and their truly magnificent headline set in 1995. So bloody good

MoreDrunkThanBlessed · 05/12/2020 21:50

I saw Pulp in ‘94 maybe in Cardiff. I was right down the front and they were amazing. I was also lucky enough to see them play the Park stage at Glastonbury a few years back (2011 maybe) and they were still amazing! I wish I’d seen them more.

MustDust · 05/12/2020 21:51

I never got to see Pulp, wish I had as Different Class has to be the album I have played more than any other.
Where did I go? 5th Ave or 42s in Mcr. I wish I could relive those days.

TheOrchidKiller · 05/12/2020 22:00

Saw Blur in 1996/7? in Rock City, Nottingham. There was condensation running down the walls. Damon was only a few feet away. He leapt into the air when they did Song 2 & the audience bounced too. Exciting & terrifying at the same time.

I have a hazy recollection of seeing Pulp in Sheffield but I think I might have imagined it, it's such a vague memory. Definitely Saw Ocean Colour Scene there, enjoyed that, but there was an air of everyone trying to be cool but trying too hard.

They did a Britpop night at Ritzy's in Nottingham in the '90s, which was ace.

Saw Oasis in early 2000s in a big arena. They were very up themselves & a bit disappointing.

I miss the 90s & the music. I was in my 20s then, happy times.

BearSoFair · 05/12/2020 22:02

Love Pulp, never saw them in the 90s but did manage to see their Teenage Cancer Trust show at the Royal Albert Hall in 2012. They were brilliant! At one point Jarvis Cocker asked "does anyone want a sweetie?" and started lobbing Celebrations into the crowd Grin

TheOrchidKiller · 05/12/2020 22:05

My last post doesn't read right. The 90's Britpop night was a DJ just playing Britpop music in a nightclub, not the actual bands playing live. Even so, it was good, music DH & I felt at home with. I otherwise hated night clubs.

bettybyebye · 05/12/2020 22:06

Bloody love pulp! I also saw them on the park stage at glasto in 2011, absolutely unbelievable!
@MustDust I too was a happy frequenter of 5th Ave and 42s whilst at uni...happy days

LiveintheNow · 05/12/2020 22:09

I just watched that too! I saw Pulp early 90s and possibly Glastonbury in 1995 though don't actually remember... also saw Bjork around the same time. I liked M People and KLF but never saw them live.

Nosuchthingastoomuchcheese · 05/12/2020 22:09

Saw them at V96 for my 18th birthday. Me and my friend got right to the front row. They were fantastic. 90s were such a great time to be a teenager. I have a teenager now and without sounding like an old fart kids just dont seem that fussed on music these days?

whenwillthemadnessend · 05/12/2020 22:10

I saw pulp at a festival and it was honestly the best band I've ever seen. I was with my very sexy boyfriend of that time ( he played guitar and had a fab 90s hairdo and he didn't get a look in. ) Jarvis has amazing stage presence.

mum2jakie · 05/12/2020 22:12

Saw Pulp at the Leadmill in Sheffield, would have been around 97 I reckon.

MyNameForToday1980 · 05/12/2020 22:17

I saw Pulp in either Hammersmith or Shepherds Bush (I forget) in late 1994.

I wore an oversized navy needlepoint cord men's shirt and a bright orange suede A-line mini skirt. And some sort of trainers.

I recently (well, recently ish) went to one of Sleeper's comeback gigs.

Both so nostalgic.

HeyChubbee · 05/12/2020 22:18

Pulp were my favourite band in the 90s - my username in those days was ‘mishape’ (might change it that now 😂

Saw them in Reading and Jarvis called it the reading 📚festival

Simpler times 😁

GigantosaurusRex · 05/12/2020 22:18

Yep, Pulp in Cardiff in the late 90sand I was mesmerised by Jarvis. Might have been supported by Edwin Collins, he supported someone I saw! Also saw the Manics in Cardiff too and a few other bands that I barely remember, 'A' was one I think.

Paperyfish · 05/12/2020 22:22

Saw pulp at Wembley! Was amazing. Love Jarvis.
In the 90’s also saw: suede, placebo, Manson, cast, garbage, divine comedy, bluetones, shed seven, green day,
Never got to see
Oasis or blue though.

Abracadabra12345 · 05/12/2020 22:23

@BearSoFair

I was there! And remember when Jarvis fell off the stage and carried on singing so you couldn’t see him just heard him until he managed to get back on? Brilliant group, lyrics, music, albums
SinkGirl · 05/12/2020 22:26

I went to so many gigs in the 90s / early 00s. Pulp, Suede, Blur, Placebo, Elastica, Menswear, Longpigs, Muse, Gene, Skunk Anansie, so many I can barely even remember. Favourite ever gig was Portishead, Beth was bloody amazing.

Saw Catalonia in a tiny local venue that I played at myself so many times, and they were supported by Space 😂 Good times.

Biggest regret - never getting to see the Manics, having tickets to sneak to Blackpool and go but my mum found out and wouldn’t let me because boys were going. Gutted.

Magpie1976 · 05/12/2020 22:32

@TheOrchidKiller I was at uni in Nottingham in the mid 90s and remember the brilliant indie nights and clubs too. indie night at the Ritz, the Rig, Rock city, Beatroot etc.

Loved Pulp. Listening to them now totally sends me back to the 90s. Brilliant band

WaltzingBetty · 05/12/2020 22:35

Saw them Sheffield arena 1994. Jarvis on home turf. Epic.
Blur at Glastonbury.
Many many more

90s indie Smile

CalmConfident · 05/12/2020 22:36

Adore pulp! @MyNameForToday1980 I saw sleeper on their tour recently too - loved it - a proper sweaty jump up and down gig with 90s nostalgia!
