Any chicken owners on here?

My DSis is in a panic. She's been told she has to keep her chickens inside because of bird flu.
She owns 3.

Large outside run, with (is it called an egloo) thing that they sleep/lay eggs in.

Does she have to being them inside her actual house?
Will they cope with central heating, etc???

What are other chicken owners doing?

TIA

No, she has to keep them under netting to prevent wild birds coming into contact with them. The new rules say
‘ housing or netting all poultry and captive birds’. Tell her to look it up on the government website though as there’s quite a bit to read up.

I just read somewhere about putting tarp over the run to stop wild bird shit landing in their proximity..

We have 3 silkie chickens and I just heard about this the other day. When it says inside I don't think they mean inside a house I think they just mean in a run so there's no contact with other wildlife. Also keep the food where other wildlife can't access it and clean shoes if you go where chickens are after - maybe just spray anti-bac spray on floor and rub shoes in it.

Hope its not bring them in as we have a cat and indoor rabbit, could get interesting. Grin

We have four hens in our garden, in an enclosed run with tarps secured over the roof.

The cooks do do have to be put inside the house or garage - they will really not like it! They need to be kept apart from wild birds, so as others have said, in an enclosed run that wild birds can't get into. Tarps over the roof are ideal as they keep the birds sheltered from the elements and stop wild birds from pooping into the enclosure.

Haha @silkiecat, I understand your username!

Thank you all for your advice. I'll let my sis know.

@MogTheShriekyCat, is there a typo in your line about the cocks? Are you saying male hens DO have to be kept indoors? I don't quite understand what you're saying but not sure if auto correct came into it? Everyone else seems to be saying more or less the same thing.

I do appreciate everyone taking the time. Thankyou. Flowers

Sorry @ClearingSpaceOnTheTrophyShelf - that was a typo on my part - it was meant to say 'The chooks do not have to be put inside...'

It has to have a roof so they can’t come into contact with wild birds. Ours are very free range so unfortunately are inside their (very spacious) coop/shed until we can make them an outdoor run with a roof. Apparently could be until April! ☹️

When I had chickens they used to love being in the house!
In fact, you couldn’t open a window or the door without them all popping in 🤣

We ended up with one girl and she'd come in through the bathroom window to roost. Luckily friends had a flock and adopted her.

Did we not have to do this a few years ago? An sure I remember keeping them in a polytunnel at one point.

Our chickens used to come into the kitchen and compete with the dogs for food dropped from high chairs.... These days, due to the fox family, they are confined to a run.

yes, my clear tarpaulin has just arrived today to cover the whole of the run, so covered -= inside - not actually in the house. The regulations take effect from 14th Dec.
