Nits- Nitty Gritty Comb and Conditioner Not Working

SilverLiningSearching · 05/12/2020 14:40

I know this subject has been done to death but Im getting increasing desperate. I just can’t clear my head of nits.
My hair is ridiculously thick and there’s lots of it, I even cut my own hair as short as I dare ( can’t do an elfin cut as I have a big fat face!) but still not clear.

In addition to the Nitty Gritty and conditioner I have also tried the usual chemist brands but no joy there.

I would happily go to a professional nit remover service but they’re four hours drive away and 2 or even 3 appointments may be required and we’re Tier 3 anyway ATM.

I am honestly thinking of buzzing all my hair off and getting a decent wig.

Would be grateful for advice, especially if you are the owner of crazy thick hair and manage get rid of the critters.

ThanksThanksThanks

The problem is that you are having to treat it yourself Sad

Nitty Gritty Comb with cheap conditioner on dry hair every 3-4 days would work but only if you can get someone to sit and do it methodically.

I would do gallons of hedrin or chemicals every 4 days to kill the hatchlings. They take 7 days to mature so that they can lay eggs.

Any idea where you caught them initially? Are you sure you aren't getting reinfected?

SilverLiningSearching · 05/12/2020 18:21

Yes it’s difficult trying to clear them yourself, I initially got them from DS but now his hair is extremely short and nits never came back to him after treatment and haircut.

In the US there is a lotion you can get on prescription SKLICE but it seems it’s not available in UK, which is a shame.

When I had them I got phantom itching for months afterwards too 😭

4 DDs with long thick wavy hair but yours sound super porous like mine - urgh

Hair dye. I embarrassing had nits when I was 14 and they crawled out my head to escape the first time my hair was dyed blonde

Putthegasfireon · 05/12/2020 18:35

Do you blow dry your hair? We did this with my son when he had nits once (he had long thick hair at the time) and it dried them out and they were gone within the week, along with using a nitty gritty comb and conditioner. Honestly, it worked brilliantly.

Witchend · 05/12/2020 18:47
@Witchend does it have to be the original Listerine flavour?
Yes apparently.
With thick hair it's far easier to thoroughly soak it, and it's cheaper too!

SilverLiningSearching · 05/12/2020 20:18

@RandomMess how did you get rid off them in the end?

RandomMess · 05/12/2020 20:21

It's mine with chemicals and then Nitty Gritty every 4 days.

With the DC just NittyGritty every 4 days but my hair is smoother than theirs so possibly easier to do than yours plus I think I got DH to help in desperate times Hmm

Haworthia · 05/12/2020 20:24

It’s shit that your mum won’t help. I would nit comb any family member who asked me! You really need to be able to see what you’re doing and comb through every square inch of scalp.

RandomMess · 05/12/2020 20:34

Not in the NW are you, we haven't anyone to bubble with...

SilverLiningSearching · 05/12/2020 21:03

@Haworthia yes it is shit she won’t help out, she is very ‘hands off’ anyway, so no great surprise.. our relationship is a whole different thread!

@RandomMess no not in NW sadly. Very kind of you though.

Urgh, I think I will have to increase the volume and frequency of chemicals and combing, if the buggers haven’t shifted I will have to take more drastic action.

Is your hair long enough to use straighteners on? I found using the nitty gritty and conditioner alone wasn't enough for me as my hair is so long and thick. Once I started straightening every bit of my hair they were gone within a week!

PetCheetah · 05/12/2020 21:44

Next time you apply hedrin or comb could you divide your hair up onto lots of really small ponytails first? That way it's easier to go through systematically and know you haven't missed any bits.
I've managed to clear DD's with a nitty gritty comb but couldn't comb my own hair well enough. Hedrin worked though.

RedSoloCup · 05/12/2020 23:05

My DD hair is so thick only thing I found worked was Full Marks and to use every 7 days until completely gone as you can never comb 💯 when hair is that thick !

saracorona · 06/12/2020 02:57

I went through the same thing with my youngest years ago. I used to plaster both of us and nit comb and still couldn't get rid of them. I bought an electric comb but it shocked the tips of our ears, agony! I presume they're greatly improved? One time, I had him sat in a chair and was combing through his hair when I just pulled up the collar of his polo shirt and there were several massive lice hiding out. I whipped it off and lashed in the open fire. I nit combed every day with hair conditioner, slowly eradicating them. To this day, I keep a nit comb by the bath to comb through the conditioner. I also make sure I brush my hair before washing to untangle first. I feel for you, the itching drove me crazy.

SilverLiningSearching · 06/12/2020 10:53

How awful @saracorona. I once caught a lice mid feast and there was blood on the nit comb🤢

Nothing so gross for a while it’s just catching all the eggs! Lots of remedies appear to more effective on hatched lice which compounds the problem.
I have read mixed reviews about electric combs but the V-tech one has a suction which may be helpful.

coal tar shampoo
& nit comb everyday
I wonder of your dm has them too? (cross re - infection)

CherryPavlova · 06/12/2020 11:06

Propriety treatment initially then
Every day gallons of conditioner, a hair clip to allow sectioning.
Old fashioned metal nit comb through all hair.
Thoroughly drying with heat and brushing every evening to damage any escapers.
Keep going for up to three weeks. Get into gorilla mode and slide off and attached nits from hairs by hand.

Maintain regular nit combing and thorough brushing to prevent further infestation.

SilverLiningSearching · 06/12/2020 17:44

Thanks again for all your suggestions will be on a mission for the next 3 weeks.
