First home gift - failsafe but not boring? Any ideas welcome

Friends daughter is buying her own home after many many years of house sharing. My budget is small - around £20 - I’d like to get something useful but not boring - she literally needs everything - but I don’t know where to start as there is so much choice. Any ideas?

A gift voucher for £20 for Argos and a nice houseplant.

Teapot, mugs
Iron
Wine glasses
Bath mat
Towels
Apron, teatowels

Cafetiere and some mugs? If she needs everything might she appreciate vouchers for Argos/IKEA/John Lewis then she can choose what to spend them on?

I mean, everyone needs teaspoons and there are never enough. But it's boring! Ditto tea towels.

A houseplant? Really cheers a place up.

A wreath for the front door?

ThePlantsitter · 05/12/2020 09:31

I'd buy an expensive version of something you wouldn't usually spend £20 on. Like a bathroom bin, or a caddy for holding washing up stuff, or some other thing from Lakeland.

NoSquirrels · 05/12/2020 09:31

Sorry - should have elaborated. The thing is most “useful” in this scenario is money/choice of your own stuff. “Not boring” can mean “thing I’d never choose that’s not my taste...”

An electric drill/screwdriver.

Best present I was ever got when I moved into my first flat.

CapGunAmmo · 05/12/2020 09:31

I’d decided on gift voucher as a last resort but I think it makes sense in that she can use it how she wants. She loves cooking so maybe a little thing for her kitchen and a voucher would be a compromise.

just give a voucher - when i moved into my first house i had bought a lot of stuff so a voucher was more practical as i could choose what i wanted

CapGunAmmo · 05/12/2020 09:33

Never thought of tools but that is a very good idea actiongirl. An electric drill would be a very useful thing that probably no one will think to get her. Thanks.

teatowels, really nice ones.
mine are always covering in gravy stains and scorch marks after a couple of months. love this Grayson Perry one.

NoSquirrels · 05/12/2020 09:40

If she loves cooking, buy some posh salt, some bread & wine, plus the gift voucher - traditional housewarming gift (“may your live always have flavour”)

dinglethedragon · 05/12/2020 09:40

A set of tea spoons wrapped nicely or in a pretty box with a label saying "for emergency use when you have no idea why there aren't any in the drawer".

I know tea spoons are small - but their rate of disappearance is shocking ! Always useful!

I agree with a gift voucher but if you're wanting to buy an actual something maybe take a trip to TK Max as they have some real bargains (and some tat).

If she likes cooking, I've found a Pyrex chicken roaster really versatile as it also works for lasagne or casseroles if you turn it upside down.

Echoing a PP, a set of screwdrivers. Or, a vacuum window cleaner?

opinionatedfreak · 05/12/2020 09:49

Pyrex measuring jug. Invaluable for cooking!

TheLightGetsIn · 05/12/2020 10:31

Does she really, literally, need everything? Because if so I'd buy her a kettle - can't get much more essential than that! And give her the receipt so it could be exchanged if someone else had the same idea.

TheLightGetsIn · 05/12/2020 10:33

Sorry, posted too soon - was going to suggest kettle plus nice mug and favourite tea/coffee if budget will stretch "for your first cuppa in the new house".

CapGunAmmo · 05/12/2020 10:40

Thanks everyone. Yes I think she needs everything. A kettle and mugs a simple but essential thought. Thanks.
