I'd never seen The Usual Suspects, but had heard it had an interesting ending. My friend was desperate for me to watch it "It's sooooo good. You'd never guess it was X". I refused to watch it for years after that. I've seen it now and although there were obviously huge spoilers I did like it.

I don't usually mind spoilers (I often struggle to follow film plots and spoilers help point me in the right direction) but this just seemed so unnecessary.

Back in the day, DH and I were huge film buffs and the oscars were a highlight of our year - we'd normally stay up and watch it live through the night but in 2002 we both had to work early in the morning so we recorded it to watch later, staying away from the news all day (easier before smartphones) and telling everyone with whom we were in contact, that we didn't want to know any of the winners. After work we had to stop by the in-laws for something. FiL knew we were heading off to watch our recording and wouldn't give anything away - but was really surprised that two black actors had won the main prizes. We were gutted to be robbed of the experience of those moments but FiL kept maintaining he did nothing wrong because he didn't mention any names.

@Verrucapepper

Bruce Willis is a ghost. The boat sinks. In the last 2 minutes he shoots his whole family as there’s no way out then the last scene is the way out and it’s just him alive.
I'm assuming 'the boat sinks' is Titanic. Did you really not know it sank? It's hardly a spoiler when it sank in 1912 and it's basically the premise of the film Confused Surely the spoiler would've been who died and who survived.

Apologies if Titanic isn't what you're referring to.

Sixth sense.
Told a friend we were going to see it in the cinema and they said ‘oh it’s really good, I didn’t pick up on ’. Kind of ruins the whole film when you know the plot twist.

People who go out of their way to spoilt tv and films for other people will be sent to the tower when I’m queen of the world.

HuggedTheRedwoods · 04/12/2020 11:11

When the Avengers Endgame film came out, I was invited to go along with friend and her son so avoided the usual articles that might have spoilers, only to find some people deliberately putting plot reveal comments in non-related articles! Annoyingly I read the plot details when reading comments in a political story, completely non-related but spoilt it for me and just wondered what motivates someone to do that.

HuggedTheRedwoods · 04/12/2020 11:14

Also, not a film, but I did once see a woman shout across a train at another to shut up when she was loudly discussing the plot of the new Harry Potter book her children had just finished. To be fair, loud parent was getting a lot of glares from all around and I think a few others were so glad someone spoke up.

MustardMitt · 04/12/2020 11:26

Armageddon Grin I was furious with my sister, but to be honest it was more sisterly irritation. I wasn’t even planning on watching it!

IGN is terrible for spoiling stuff - The Walking Dead years ago had a very tense ending to a series - within 2 hours IGN had an article about it all over Facebook. We got the episode the next day, but they couldn’t hold off - and the spoiler was in the title of their article! Now that did genuinely piss me off. Of course plenty of people told me I should have avoided all social media if I didn’t want to see a spoiler about it - I didn’t even follow IGN at the time, it was a recommended page.

MustardMitt · 04/12/2020 11:28

@HuggedTheRedwoods you’ve reminded me, someone did that on here, when the film had been out for about a month? Not long, it was still in cinemas. The thread was totally unrelated. I was so pissed off - but apparently that made me a proper sad case Hmm

flowery · 04/12/2020 11:29

The Usual Suspects. As a result, I have never bothered watching it.

AlexCabot · 04/12/2020 11:30

Someone on here spoiled Last Christmas. Put the spoiler in the thread title! It was a year ago and I still haven't watched the film because I don't see the point now.

notafanoftheman · 04/12/2020 11:42

There has actually been research done that demonstrates people enjoy watching a film or reading a book more when it’s been spoiled for them.

HuggedTheRedwoods · 04/12/2020 12:38

Mustard - there's no excuse for it, especially in those first few weeks. I get that those who have seen films early might want to discuss but to put in unrelated articles/threads is just thoughtless at best and nasty when deliberate. It wasn't you who was the sad case at all.

ExpensivelyDecorated · 04/12/2020 12:39

Yes, I find I enjoy things more when I know what's going to happen. I am careful not to spoilt things for other people but I have no issue with finding out endings beforehand myself.

As a teenager I went to see Jaws at the local cinema. There weren't many people in the queue and for some reason they let us in early for the next show. As we entered the auditorium was in darkness and they were still playing the last 15 minutes of the previous screening 😱

SlightDrizzle · 04/12/2020 15:43

I drunkenly told everyone in my carriage on the drunken last Victoria Line tube after a midnight launch of (maybe) the last Harry Potter novel that Hagrid was killed off. I invented a heart-rending death scene. I don't think anyone objected on spoiler grounds, but if anyone was sober enough to remember it by the time they read the novel, they might have been puzzled by Hagrid remaining hale and hearty.

(In fairness, Hagrid is a deeply annoying character, and reading his dialogue aloud at bedtime to DS made me find him even more annoying.)

purrswhileheeats · 04/12/2020 15:54

@NoMeatIsHumane

There was a great scene in The Simpsons of a young Homer and Marge walking out of the cinema past the next queue of people waiting to go in and Homer says loudly "I can't believe Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker's father!" The line collectively groans....

Grin

Grin

I was queuing outside the cinema with my friends in 1990 to watch Pretty Woman, another group of friends walked out from an earlier showing of Presumed Innocent and shouted 'The wife did it!'. Pretty Woman was full so we had to watch PI knowing the bloody ending, bastards 😭

LaPoesieEstDansLaRue · 04/12/2020 16:01

Yes, a major plot point of a Star Wars film was given away in a discussion on bloody Loose Women (I virtually never watch it as it's so annoying and was particularly annoyed I'd watched it that day) In fairness, I think the film had been released a while.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 04/12/2020 16:05

The bloody trailers ruined 6th sense. It was endless.

"I see dead people,
They walk around like regular people.
They don't even realise they are dead"

If you truly didn't figure the plot out in the first few mins of the film then I envy you, because, although it was a good film, I would've liked to watch without knowing.

My dickhead ex once had a go at me that I ruined Apollo 13 because I knew how it would end Hmm

Usual suspects is still worth a watch though.

Gilead · 04/12/2020 16:14

Many years ago when Barry Norman was still doing film 85 or whatever year it was I went to a charity dinner. Turns out Mr Norman was there and my family were sat at his table. Obviously got to taking about films. Had we seen Jagged edge? Sister had, told us about it and gave away the ending. She got a mention (not by name but a good dig) on the programme the following week for spoilers!

WeAllHaveWings · 04/12/2020 16:15

Agree with @Whatsnewpussyhat, someone said to me you'll love the twist at the end but I'm not telling you what it is. As soon as you know where is a twist it is usually really obvious.

HalloumiFries · 04/12/2020 17:01

I was really pleased that I saw the Sixth Sense a few days after returning to the UK after travelling for a year - I knew nothing about it at all but got really swept up the story and was gobsmacked at the end.

I also need to admit to seeing The Village when I was quite tipsy. I'd gone out for a few after work, knowing I was meeting DH and friends at the cinema later. Inhibitions lowered, I leaned over to DH about halfway through the film and in a very loud stage whisper, said "oooh, I've just figured out that xxxxxxxxxx". Cue lots of groaning and muttering around us.

I hate talking in cinemas and I hate being spoiled so every time I'm a victim of one or both of those, I feel it is karma for that night. Sorry to anyone who was there. It was a shit film though.
