Hair has completely changed

At the start of this year my hair completely changed. It’s become finer, less of it, it won’t stay straight... blood tests haven’t revealed anything. No change of diet. Not increased use of straighteners etc.
My hair has always been relatively fine, but now it just looks straggly and messy. I know it’s only hair, but I do feel a bit rubbish about it. I wash it every 2-3 days. I blow dry it with a barrel brush. If I’m going out I run the straighteners over it, only on 140 degrees though.
I’ve tried various shampoos, sprays, thickeners, etc. It just looks awful. After I’ve straightened it, it doesn’t last long and becomes messy, windswept and thin and horrid.

Anyone else had this? I’m mid-30s. Have had hormone levels checked and not that.

Mine is the same though I'm post-menopause. I used to have lush shiny hair that was so thick a blow dry took forever. Now, it's thin and frizzy and each hair is weak and very thin. I'm very gentle with it and have wasted money on Viviscal etc but nothing had worked. When I've just washed it I can get it to look OK but try to do this only every 5 days now (never gets greasy, just very flat) as loads falls out when I wash it - roots and all. It is very sad. Do you take a multivitamin with added iron? Have you had your thyroid checked out? Good luck, I hope yours gets better.

Do you live somewhere with hard water? My hair used to be gorgeous and shiny, a delight to dry too.
Now it's dull, not smooth and even wiry. I think it's due to hard water.
I tried a vinegar rinse but I found some hard water shampoo and conditioner and I think (early days) it's helping.

I have exactly the same problem and like the previous poster I am also post menopause. I always had fine hair but lots of it and it was shiny and in good condition. Now I have thin, frizzy hair. I probably don't help it as I have it dyed every 5 weeks as I'm not ready to go grey yet. I do have it done professionally though and have an anti-frizz treatment put on at the same time which helps for a couple of weeks.

I've started taking some health supplements which are specifically for hair and nails etc. Not seen any improvement yet but will keep taking them and keep my fingers crossed. I do find keeping my hair a little shorter (I have a shoulder length bob) can give it a bit more bounce but I'm torn as I prefer it longer as it means I can tie it back when it looks awful. Damp weather is my worst nightmare. I can be outside for 30 seconds and I look like a witch!

Having had poker straight hair all my life I hit 40 and it started to go a bit wavey!! It's a bloody pita to style now!!

gillianan · 04/12/2020 07:32

when you say blood tests haven't showed anything, have you actually got the print outs yourself or just the doc saying they're fine?

Toreportornot · 04/12/2020 09:07

@lifestooshort123 Will try multivitamins. Have had thyroid tested and it’s fine apparently. I was wondering about stuff like viviscal but won’t bother if it’s no good.

@LeslieYep No, soft water here. Good thinking though!

@Icequeen01Haha I rock the witch look! Mine is shoulder length as I also like being able to tie it back - at the moment it just won’t stay straight / styled, so whilst I’ve contemplated a bob, I feel it might just look awful.

@Santaisironingwrappingpaper So annoying isn’t it!

@gillianan No, I’ve not seen the results, they just said all ok. Why?

Biotin is supposed to be good for hair.

gillianan · 04/12/2020 09:27

@Toreportornot because very often your b12,iron etc levels will be scraping by at the lowest level to be just within limits for NHS so they say they're "fine" when really optimum levels are significantly higher. Ask for your print out and check your levels compared to optimum to see if there's any areas that look way off.

After my hair was badly damaged by a colour change (I went from black to red, professionally, but still, it wasn't one of best ideas), the strands were badly broken and v dry, I started to take Hair Burst regularly and after three months, my hair was looking in better condition. I've now been taking it for a couple of years straight and my hair has never been better, it's thick, long and strong, sometimes I'm asked if it's extensions. I would suggest giving it a go. You have to be patient though, it doesn't work in a week or even weeks, it will take months, of continual daily useage.

I'm 46 and peri meno.
