Does anyone else hear a high pitched static/electricity noise in their heads?!

I've noticed this weird noise that seems to come from my head for the last couple of months. At first I just kind of thought 'that's weird' but now I'm panicking a bit! Anyone else get this? Is it normal?!

Yes...I have tinnitus, is that something you're aware of having?

ZowieCavie · 03/12/2020 14:40

Also have tinnitus I find listening to an audio book where the author has a soothing voice can make it better. Loud noises eg cinema make it worse.

ILikeToBeBesideTheSea · 03/12/2020 14:41

No, not until this started! Can it start for no apparent reason?

Yes, permanent whining, I've got tinnitus. I don't know if it can come on suddenly though, I've had mine since I can remember

MostIneptThatEverStepped · 03/12/2020 15:03

Honestly don't know, I know that at times starting a new type of medication has made mine worse.

I suppose it's possible you had it for a while but it's just cranked up a notch and so you're registering it now. Hopefully you will be able to tune it out.

StopGo · 03/12/2020 15:05

I have had tinnitus since I was three years old. A complication of measles. It can start suddenly but please get it checked out.

HappyPumpkin81 · 03/12/2020 15:10

Yes, all the time but I do really notice it until I think about it, or I'm feeling unwell. I don't have tinnitus or problems with my hearing.

ILikeToBeBesideTheSea · 03/12/2020 15:40

It's quite annoying, hard to ignore it now I know it's there!

Yes, but I only notice it when I’m in a quiet room, and not concentrating on anything else. I’m very sensitive to sensory stimuli in general, so I attribute it to being part of that tendency.

user1471538283 · 03/12/2020 16:24

I get it sometimes but other sounds then fade. It's supposed to be a left over of when we could hear a higher pitch

ILikeToBeBesideTheSea · 03/12/2020 16:28

Maybe I'll stop noticing it eventually. It's almost like I can hear my brain working!

Mine started overnight for no reason 10 years ago. Relax and try and accept it as the more you stress the worse it feels. You're aiming to habituate and then you hardly notice it. Join Tinnitus Support Group UK on FB and get some tips and advice - a really friendly bunch.

ILikeToBeBesideTheSea · 03/12/2020 17:31

Oh dear, so it's not going to go..... That sounds a bit dire.....

I've noticed that I've had this for the last few months. I didn't think it was tinnitus as that was always described as ringing in the ears and it definitely isn't ringing.

Glad I'm not alone.

ILikeToBeBesideTheSea · 03/12/2020 20:29

I think any noise you hear that isn't external is classed as tinnitus.

LuckyAmy1986 · 03/12/2020 20:51

I get that sometimes but the one I have all the time, ALL the time, is the sound of my pulse. I have had it looked into and it's nothing dodgy but it does make me sad that I will always have it. Way more used to it now than I used to be, I don't notice it as much.

whitewineandmagnums · 03/12/2020 20:55

I get this when I'm particularly anxious or stressed

cavaliercleo · 03/12/2020 20:57

I have a ringing in my ears (like I used to get after being in a nightclub) all the time now but most days it doesn't bother me. Some days it can be louder and feel like my ears are blocked and it's annoying. Tinnitus is on the list of menopause symptoms and I'm the right age for that so assuming it's that.

MandosHatHair · 03/12/2020 21:01

Definitely get it checked out, it may be an easy thing to fix. With me it was due to a wax build up, the nurse syringed my ears and the ringing stopped Smile

redeyetonowheregood · 03/12/2020 21:08

Sounds like tinnitus. Mine was triggered about 12 years ago by lots of prolonged stress. Now it is just part of my life. I use a sound oasis machine with under pillow speakers at night or I would never sleep.

Your GP can refer you to an audiologist.

ILikeToBeBesideTheSea · 03/12/2020 21:13

Well it's driving me crackers. Can't imagine getting used to it/it being part of my life forever! How depressing.

OP posts:
JamesAnderson · 03/12/2020 21:33

I get it in bed at night when everything is quiet.
I like it, it's my signal it's time to relax and go to sleep.

LethargicLumpOfLockdownLard · 03/12/2020 21:40

Go and have your ears looked in by your practice nurse, may just be wax build up.
I'm still doing ear stuff, though I know some practices have stopped but worth asking.

ILikeToBeBesideTheSea · 03/12/2020 21:50

Mines too loud to only hear at night. Will get my ears checked. It doesn't seem to be coming from an ear, just general head noise really so doubt it's blocked ears.

frustrationcentral · 03/12/2020 21:54

I get this too, have had it for about 9 months. I'm sure it's tinnitus - really should get it checked out

I actually quite like it Blush, find the whooshing sound quite soothing. I'm weird Grin
