5 year old daughter in pain

My 5 year old had a crappy night sleep last night, awake for four hours in the night being hot and cold and couldn’t sleep. Took her temperature and it was normal. She has been fine during day, quiet after pick up and from school. She went to sleep for 7 and woke at 8 needing a wee and she hasn’t been back to sleep since. She is complaining massively of a sore bottom, front and back, keeps trying for a wee and poo and is crying a lot. I have given some calpol about an hour ago and it hasn’t made any difference. I’m not sure what to do next. Any advice greatly received.

You need to call 111. Nobody on mumsnet can give you an accurate diagnosis of what’s going on and if she’s very distressed with an unusual symptom like this then you need a proper medical opinion.

Could it be a urinary infection? My DD got one when she was 5 ish. They can get a bit lazy about wiping properly and that can cause it. I took DD to GP and she gave ABs. I'd ring GP tomorrow.

Until then give a nice tepid shower and good clean up down there. It might help and sooth. Have you any nappy cream left over? A dab of that might sooth too.

Meant to add - get her to drink lots of water. Sipping it through straw while you read maybe?

Don't put anything on it or give her anything until you know what's wrong. If she's in a lot of distress, potentially put her in a lukewarm bath to settle her and phone 111 ASAP.

Any chance it could be threadworms? I have seen so many threads on here (scuse pun) where a female child has been very sore down below, and eventually, the parent caught sight of worms. They can be really tricky to identify. It would fit with her being okay during the day and then really uncomfortable at night. You need to check around her anus and vulva with a torch to see the buggers.

If you find any, slather vaseline liberally to stop them being able to wriggle around, and get her some Ovex from a chemist as soon as possible. Then look up all the hygiene measures necessary to get rid of them fully.

Agree with others though - call 111 if no sign of worms and you can’t settle her.

If urinating is painful/stinging you could get her to try and wee in the bath while you gently (i.e. on a low-ish flow) shower her vulva with warm water at the same time. Or if you don’t have a shower hose, by pouring a jug of warm water on the area. This helped my daughter when she had a horrendously sore bottom from not wiping properly when she first started school.

If it is a UTI, there's a risk of a kidney infection so I'd call 111 anyway (though I'm a bit of a hypochondriac!)

I would check for threadworms as well. They can get into the vagina and be so uncomfortable. If it's not that then I would speak to 111 x

@Whattodowiththedrunkensailor

Just wondering how DD is today OP? Feeling better i hope :)

Thank you for everyone’s replies. Wednesday night she settled after a few hours and woke up Thursday absolutely fine, so I didn’t contact the doctor. Then it was the same last night, fell asleep ok, woke up an hour later complaining she was sore and hurting and that went on again for nearly three hours with her needing to try for a wee or a pop at least 7 times and really quite distressed. I will call the doctors first thing, I have a sample bottle so can collect her wee when she wakes up so I have that if needed.

I read up about threadworms and did check last night but couldn’t see anything at all.
