How to heal from divorce

NoEffingWay · 02/12/2020 12:20

Put into chat for traffic.

Have been divorced for almost a year, and thought I was dealing with it well but lately I have found myself becoming tearful and upset.
What can I do to help myself heal? Usually I would go and have a few drinks with a friend and have a good talk but that's just not been possible with lockdown.

Bumped for the evening crowd

I’d still try and meet friends, for a walk or an illegal coffee

That’s what I’d do. Lockdown is very hard on people’s mental health and we can’t do it alone

So I’d reach out

I'm sorry you are feeling this way. I think lockdown has had such an effect on people's mental health that if you have trauma to deal with as well, it must be terribly hard.

Can you meet your friends in the daytime and go for a walk together instead?

Have you tried therapy?

NoEffingWay · 02/12/2020 18:28

Not tried therapy as such, I work in mental health so have hundreds of mh nurses at my disposal but we are always busy and I find it difficult to talk to others about it. I have been meeting friends for walks in the park, and have been making more effort to do this in recent weeks.
It's almost as if I have held it together for so long but now the dam has burst it's banks.

I'm sorry OP, that sounds really hard. But i don't think you'd want to use a colleague professionally - it couldn't hurt to find someone (you dont work) with and try a few sessions?

Hello, I am coming up to a year separated and the divorce is almost done. I have been feeling particularly sad the last few weeks too. No real tips, but you're not alone.
The stress of covid and Christmas looming will probably not be helping?
I would second getting some counselling from someone separate from your working life. It is on my agenda too. I had some counselling early on and it helped with the initial grief, but I am now thinking of using it for moving forwards.

And yes to walking and talking with a friend. Helps me enormously and I will forever value my walking friend for getting me through the last few months.

I found counselling very helpful. I was able to talk to friends, but they just made all the right noises, plus I felt like I was just banging on endlessly about the same bloody topic and boring them. With my counsellor, if I get stuck on something, she moves me on or goes through it in detail and depth which has been really useful.
