Broken tooth what can be done?

I’ve just broken part of my wisdom tooth which already has a very large filling in it. It seems to be a fractured cusp which means that it’s a chunk of the chewing surface that has broken off but it’s a fairly big chunk. I’m due to see the dentist tomorrow does anyone know what they may be able to do? I hate dentists and I’m terrified it’ll need removing.

I had similar on a back tooth. The dentist moulded a piece of putty type stuff in the shape of the chunk missing and hardened it. Does the job although I was told it wouldn’t last forever but I think I’ve had it a few years now

@CatsMother66 thank you. Was the tooth already filled? I’m really hoping something like this can be done. The wisdom teeth I’ve had removed were a nightmare to get out and couldn’t be done at the dentist. Did you have to have an injection or any drilling done?

Probably a composite filling. That what I always seem to end up with if the tooth is already filled. Rather than remove the existing filling if it is still sound, they just drilled away any decay and did a composite restoration.

Possibly a crown?

Bettydot · 01/12/2020 18:52

Thanks @nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut I hope they can do that I’m worried the tooth won’t be strong enough as so much of it was already filling.

@Kokosrieksts unfortunately I don’t think they can use crowns on wisdom teeth

Yes, big filling in that tooth, more filling than tooth!

Bettydot · 01/12/2020 20:24

@CatsMother66 thanks for your reply, that’s really reassuring. Fingers crossed they can do something similar tomorrow.

They can use crowns on wisdom teeth one of mine has one. As long as the tooth is strong enough to support it. Try not to worry. I had one that was about 3 quarters filling and they still attempted to repair it before eventually extracting it due to infection.

Bettydot · 01/12/2020 21:37

@nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut aw that’s good to know thank you. Unfortunately I’m not convinced there is enough tooth left for a crown but that’s good to know that they tried to repair your tooth. Longer term I think it needs removing but my others were a nightmare to remove and it would have to be done in hospital so I’m hoping they can at least temporarily repair it.

If its an upper wisdom, they usually come out significantly easier than lower ones. Either way, you'll be ok. Ask them to use the gel before the injection and you won't even feel the scratch. I'm a complete wuss about dentists and never had one refuse to make their own lives easier. Grin

@nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut oh noooo it’s the upper ones I’ve had out and were a nightmare. My last one took an hour to remove in hospital and they had to get a senior surgeon in to finish the job 😭 I swore they’d have to put me under to ever take another out 😂.

That might be a good thing though because they'll think 'fuck extracting that' and repair it. 😂

Bettydot · 02/12/2020 11:35

@nothingcanhurtmewithmyeyesshut 🤣 let’s hope so 🤞

It’s got to come out 😭 fortunately it can wait until the New Year but they dentist is confident he can do it at the surgery despite all the problems I had with my last two 😩
