Fungal nail infection

catsmother20 · 30/11/2020 20:47

I've got a ram horn nail or whatever it's called, been trying to get rid of for 3 years, I did loceryl for over a year, tried the Vicks thing, never got anywhere. It's now spreading to my other toes and I'm so embarrassed. I feel my only option is to go to the GP but feel guilty with everything that's going on, did anyone have any success after seeing a Dr? I saw laser treatment but I can't really afford that at the moment.

My dh took oral antifungals for about 6 months for his fungal toenails

TabbyStar · 30/11/2020 21:11

My DB had his toenail taken off as his was severe but he definitely wouldn't recommend that! I've got a fungus-y nail too and mine doesn't seem to respond to anything either.

catsmother20 · 30/11/2020 21:11

Did it work? Permanently? I'm just worried they won't work and sounds like they aren't the nicest tablets to take.

Did the toe nail removal work? Only one of my nails is really bad, and it's the toe next to the little toe so I assume that wouldn't be too painful. I'm worried as my big toe is starting to turn now :(

My dr is refusing to give me the oral antifungals 😭

TooTiredToBeCreative · 30/11/2020 21:14

The tablets worked for me, luckily didn’t have any side effects but had to have a kidney or liver (can’t remember which!) function test a couple of times.

flowerycurtain · 30/11/2020 21:16

I had the oral antifungals for about 6 months 10 years ago. Sorted the problem and it's never returned. I felt so guilty asking the doctor for it but I often think now how glad I am I did it.

The other thing I do now is put tea tree oil on the toe nails a few times a week. Not sure if it helps.

PeakyPaula · 30/11/2020 21:19

T Tree oil worked for me, on a cotton bud every morning and evening, it stopped it spreading and allowed the healthy nail to grow.

MrsWooster · 30/11/2020 21:23

I was going to say neat tea tree oil too...

TabbyStar · 30/11/2020 21:24

My DB's mail is only just growing back now, it would be terrible if it was still fungus-y! He's been in hospital a lot and he says this is the worst thing that ever happened to him. Apparently our toes are one of the most sensitive bits of our bodies.

I don't really want to take the drugs because of the side effects either. I've only got it at the tip of my big toe at the moment but it's been like that for a year or two. Loceryl hasn't worked for me, nor tea tree.

catsmother20 · 30/11/2020 22:11

@cookielove why won't your doctor give them to you?

I survived roaccutane, can't be as bad as that surely Grin

Plenty of Vick on every nail daily after shower for 6/7 months over last winter finally cleared mine.

DigitalChristmas · 30/11/2020 22:16

@cookielove

My dr is refusing to give me the oral antifungals 😭
@cookielove they can wreak havoc on the liver. A dear friend ended up getting into scary territory with her liver function as a result of the tablets.
bigpricklyfern · 30/11/2020 22:32

I had the anti fungal tablets years ago. Never had any liver tests or told about any risks 😱. They cleared up my toe nails over the 6 month course, but years down the line I have them again, and my current GP refuses to let me have the tablets again.

Wigeon · 30/11/2020 22:38

Same here, on one big toe - doctor said tablets weren’t worth the risk of the side effects on your liver. Have tried Loceryl for prob a year and made no difference. Now trying tea tree oil, been going for about 3 weeks but from what I’ve read it might take months too, if it works at all.

Are you just stuck with it for life sometimes? 😬

ivykaty44 · 30/11/2020 22:40

I was going to suggest tea tree oil

cherrypiepie · 30/11/2020 22:44

Terbanfine one a day prescription. It was satisfying to see the nail grow out healthy. Like a tide

A chiropodist offered to do me a private script about 15 years ago

With the numbers o this threads saying that they have been refused medication, the guidlines on prescribing may well have change so have a look a them.

Cuddling57 · 30/11/2020 22:49

I have just put vicks on my big toenail for the fungus! On day one and not sure I can wear socks in bed!
Tried tea tree oil and vinegar and even bought a little toe nail light thingy. Thought the light was working but hasn't in the end.
Really don't want to take the tablets.
If it was my smaller toenail I'd have it taken off.

AnnaMagnani · 30/11/2020 22:53

I had the antifungals. had a feeling my GP wouldn't prescribe and got an online prescription from Lloyds. You just have to send them a photo of your toe.

Tea tree was a sodding waste of time for several years where the nail just got worse. Ditto the nail lacquer.

catsmother20 · 30/11/2020 22:57

@AnnaMagnani Lloyds let you do that without a Dr?

I know it sounds so vain taking medication for a condition not causing any pain, but I'm really self conscious about it, don't want to be resigned to closed toe sandals in my 30s, and it only gets worse untreated doesn't it? I had athletes foot I think, I remember having red itchy toes for a while before it started, didn't know what it was at the time, that's long gone now so I'm hoping if I can shift it, it won't come back if I stop athlete's foot?!

Whereabouts on their website is it? I’ve just had a look and maybe I’m being daft but I can’t see it?

My nails are gross but I don’t want to bother the GP with it - a private prescription would be perfect!

AnnaMagnani · 01/12/2020 08:00

Oh maybe it's gone - it was a few years ago.

However a quick google of online doctor fungal nail showed service still available from numerous other places.

RNBrie · 01/12/2020 08:19

I had a fungal toe nail for 6 years, couldn't take the medication as I was always pregnant or breastfeeding.

I started using the scholl anti fungal treatment. Twice a day for just over a year and it's cured it. Had to be relentless and consistent and it got worse before it got better but persistence eventually paid off.
