At my daughter's school each child has been asked to produce a card for a pensioner in a care home to cheer them up for the holidays. They have been asked not to wish a happy Christmas but just happy holidays. We are a bit stumped for ideas of what do as we assume Christmas trees, angels, Father Christmas and the like are out. Other then adding a robin does anyone have any idea do how to decorate or what message to add? Thank you.

A cut out snowflake stuck onto a different colour card.
Snowman. Reindeer.
Xmas trees fine I'd say. Also stars, garlands. Brussels sprouts! Anything apart from religious stuff.

Holly, door with a holly and ivy wreath.
Deer in a snowy forest.
Snowman.

Happy Christmas isn't going to shock the average 'pensioner'(hate that expression) ; has it been banned? Happy Holidays is very American.

My Muslim neighbours are happy to exchange cards saying Happy Christmas. It is,after all,Christmas.
Nor are Christmas trees and Father Christmas religious symbols.

As they say,it's the thought that counts, and I'm sure the average resident in a care home would be pleased with any cheerful design.

How old is DD?

2020again · 30/11/2020 20:56

She is 12.

But what to put inside it? wishing you happy holidays - not the most thrilling thing to read. I like the idea of this but it is difficult writing to someone you know nothing about - not all older people are the same.

Seasons greetings?

Dyrne · 01/12/2020 07:38

It doesn’t really matter what you write - many people will just be touched that someone has cared enough to make and send a card, even if you think the message is a bit generic. Older people in particular really struggle with loneliness.

How about something like “I hope you enjoy this Holiday Season; especially after such a difficult year. Wishing you all the best in the year to come”?
