Would you buy anything from Debenhams atm?

I’ve seen two cardigans in Debenhams, but just feel a bit unsure if I should buy from them at the moment, I would pay by credit card but as it’s under £100 I would probably not be covered if they go bust. What would you do? I have avoided Dorothy Perkins and Wallis but just seen in the news Debenhams could be affected too.

I bought my brother a gift card from Zizzi (cd shop can't remember its name now) went into administration. Couldn't spend it got about a £1 back. If you have gift cards I'd try and spend them tonight .

Shopaholic100 · 30/11/2020 22:16

Gift cards probably aren’t a great gift idea this year, there’s just too much uncertainty.

I thought that the shops and online would continue to trade in the short term?

@Shopaholic100

Breaking news Debenhams are closing.
Where did you see that? Smile
GreyishDays · 01/12/2020 09:39

I think it’s being reported in a really confusing way.

So Arcadia used to own Debenhams but doesn’t any more. But if Arcadia goes it will just push Debenhams over the edge. I think. They were in trouble anyway.

Blughbablugh · 01/12/2020 09:41

@GreyishDays its just come up as a news flash on the BBC app

Peridot1 · 01/12/2020 09:41

@SuddenArborealStop

No I wouldn't because they screwed their Irish staff out of redundancy money and I won't cross the picket line even digitally
Same here.
GreyishDays · 01/12/2020 09:43

Oh yeah. Thanks! Wasn’t there that I could see (ie I am blind).

LightasaBreeze · 01/12/2020 09:45

JD Sports have pulled out of the sale, not surprising really as the original sale would have also included all the Arcadia concessions, so it wouldn't be a good deal for them now

Shopaholic100 · 01/12/2020 09:47

I had a message from Debenhams yesterday evening to say it’s on its way, but the Hermes tracking is saying they are expecting my parcel, so I’m not sure if I’ll get it yet.

Damn I just made an order yesterday, although not for a huge order. Hope it comes. I’ve got a credit card with them too, wonder what will happen to that? 🤔

Topseyt · 01/12/2020 10:13

I feel so sad for Debenhams staff. I think there have been two final nails in the coffin here that have combined to finally tip it over the edge although writing has been on the wall for several years.

One is JD Sports pulling out of any deal and the second is the collapse into administration of Arcadia yesterday. That isn't because Debenhams was owned by Arcadia, it wasn't. It is because they sold a number of Arcadia brands such as Wallis and Dorothy Perkins so had the concessions there. It gave Arcadia a fair old stake in Debenhams, one way or another.

I would no longer buy anything from either Debenhams or Arcadia stores that I couldn't buy in store and take home with me.

The stores remain shut until tomorrow, depending on what tier your area is in.

I am in tier 2. I will do most Christmas shopping online but I do like a pre Christmas stroll through a local city centre High Street each year. I still plan to do that but I think it will be a very different experience this year, and much sadder because if all of these brands are already winding down then they will leave massive holes in the shopping areas.

To cap it all, the Covid 19 pandemic and the fallout couldn't have come at a worse time for the retail staff involved.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 01/12/2020 10:24

I bought a jumper from Topshop on Friday and am wearing it right now - delivered yesterday. I don't think I would buy anything else now though.

TheBugHouse · 01/12/2020 10:49

I had parcels come yesterday
I feel really sad for Debenhams as love their show, especially principals. Have always bought loads from them. After this pandemic is all over and we want clothes to go out there will be nowhere decent Left.

Gossipgirl2 · 01/12/2020 11:29

Just placed an order a couple of hours ago
Not great timing then! Such a shame always loved shopping in there.

H1978 · 01/12/2020 11:39

On the website it says they’re still taking online order for now. Sad for the people loosing their jobs. Online shopping had destroyed the high street. 😞

EvilPea · 01/12/2020 12:40

Really sad.
Debenhams is a shop that always comes up trumps. Not necessarily the first place I think of, but when I finally get there they’ve got that golden goose egg I couldn’t find elsewhere

MildDrPepperAddiction · 01/12/2020 12:43

I wouldn't because of the disgraceful way they treated all their staff in ireland.

Originalyellowbelly · 01/12/2020 12:45

I have a relative who is a manager at Debenhams distribution centre, it is business as usual at present.

BashfulClam · 01/12/2020 13:23

Death of the high street..,I really love dorothy perkins and now have no idea where I’ll get decent jeans that fit.

GreyishDays · 01/12/2020 13:26

Oh, what was that? Or can I just google? Smile
Legoandloldolls · 01/12/2020 13:37

The high street is in a sad state now. I had a Christmas job in Debenhams when I left uni so some found memories.

I am not a hugh fan of buying clothes online. I think it will be buying clothes from Primark and supermarkets soon as what's the point t of looking around a high street where so many shops have permanently shut or pulled out?

I live near a big town where 2 gaps have shut, Debenhams, Topshop, Topman, Dorothy Perkins,Monsoon,Evan's and H&M have gone this year alone. The only new shop is Olivia Bonus. The rest are now empty. So sad. Like visiting a graveyard now

@GreyishDays - they screwed all their Irish staff out of redundancy payments. Declared bankruptcy in Ireland while they were still trading here in uk. Tried to shift all the stock over to uk.

Shitty indeed.
