Is your living room furniture around the edges of the room?

I don't know anyone who has furniture other than around the perimeter in their living room.

There must be some out there!

Yes, except the coffee table. That's in front of the sofa.

We have seperate living room, dining room and kitchen. They are a decent size, but wouldn't be if the furniture was in the middle of the room

PigsInHeaven · 30/11/2020 19:50

No, we have a big old Victorian house with large square rooms, and there’s plenty of space. Plus one entire wall is floor to picture rail bookshelves in each room.

SockDrawer · 30/11/2020 19:51

No. There’s only about a metre between the back of the sofa and the wall so it’s not used for anything, but feels better.

nope, not against the wall. We finally have space to have the furniture in the room, not on the outskirts :)

GreekOddess · 30/11/2020 20:06

We have a small living room so our sofa has to go against the wall. It's a luxury to have alternative options.

Wester · 30/11/2020 20:12

Never had furniture against the walls. Of you say their isn't enough space, get a bigger house or smaller furniture?!

MessAllOver · 30/11/2020 20:19

@Wester. You're funny Grin.

Average size of a new build 3 bed is 88 square metres and some are even smaller round here. Better hope they start making 2D furniture then, if it's not to go against the wall.

ApolloandDaphne · 30/11/2020 20:24

My sofas are both in from the walls. I have a console on the wall behind one and I need space to walk behind the other one to our sunroom so I have a footstool under the window a space then the sofa.

EmpressoftheMundane · 30/11/2020 20:24

One sofa in the bay, the other floating. Would like to float both, but room is too small. It’s also too big to put everything against the wall. It’s awkward. I haven’t figured it out.

Bluntness100 · 30/11/2020 20:29

Sort off they are about a foot away. Although I have a friend who it drives nuts and she constantly pushes them back against the wall when she’s visiting. And I pull them back out again, 😂

Hmm
HeyMicky · 30/11/2020 20:30

No, we have a long room. It's split into two zones by two sofas and a narrow sofa table back to back. "Smart" end with the woodburner, arm chairs french doors and bookcases at one end; more casual at the other with an L shaped sofa and the TV

DuesToTheDirt · 30/11/2020 20:35

People in ads, especially young couples, have sofas in the middle of the room, I was pointing this out to DH just yesterday. Our living room isn't big enough to do that.

ChonkyLamp · 30/11/2020 20:38

PandemicattheDisco - oh dear God. That should really be illegal.

MissCalamity · 30/11/2020 20:42

We finally re-decorated our living room last year after moving in 8 years ago and kept our furniture from the old house, it was a 3 seater and 2 chairs and there wasn't a great deal of space, so the 3 seater was in the middle of the room leading in from the front door.

I hated it, now we have knocked down the chimney breast so could put a corner settee in and have loads of space.
I love it!!

Squidwitch · 30/11/2020 21:03

I was thinking this only recently, when I grew up in the seventies, I don't remember anyone having sofas against the wall unless there was a party, but we had literally a sofa, dad's chair and a TV, there were no toys, bookshelves, pcs or anything. Everyone played behind sofas or stashed junk behind them when neighbours turned up

Squidwitch · 30/11/2020 21:05

I should add we did have toys, but they were pretty much upstairs. I change my lounge layout every month, still yet to find the perfect layout for our lounge that is basically a wide corridor

Gosh, wish I'd thought of that Hmm

My mum says when she was young (in the 30s) everyone had their furniture by the fire to keep warm.

Not always @GreekOddess I live in a small flat and do definitely agree that spacious housing is costly. But (unless the room is particularly narrow or awkward) then even in a small room you can pull the furniture away from the walls. (Mine is a bit like these photos.)

Sure! Just bank transfer me some money & I'll happily buy a bigger house.

I want a comfortable sofa to lounge on, not some skinny affair to perch on.

🙄🙄

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 01/12/2020 07:47

If we moved the sofas away from the walls we would have to climb over the backs of them to get into the room.

It's an awkward shape (position of door, fire, etc). I suppose we could just buy new furniture every couple of years for each new house...

What sort of smaller furniture? Narrow benches? Confused
Our two sofas are against walls. One is in front of a radiator.Shock

Only on Mumsnet.

We have quite a big living room by modern standards, about 3.5 m x 6 m, thank you Parker Morris standards for post war council housing.

However, this is offset by the original kitchen being tiny but the layout included a serving hatch between the kitchen and what was intended as the dining space in one end of the living room, with a lovely view over fields.

Sadly the previous owners blocked this off because they fell out of fashion at some point, which is a shame because we did have one in our first flat and it was great for passing plates through from the kitchen to the dining table, again this was in a council flat with a small kitchen and a large living/dining room.

I wish with our current house that we'd reopened the serving hatch and made it a bit bigger as the layout would have worked quite well, with the seating area at the other end of the room.
