Who buys winter strawberries?

I love strawberries, as soon as the UK ones are in the shops, somewhere around wimbledon time, I indulge as often as I can until around late September when they go tasteless... I pull down the shutters, sweep up and declare the strawberry party over until next year.

On the odd occasion in between I have been tempted by some beautiful red examples and have cursed my gullible self for spending hard earned cash on hard tasteless strawbs.

Bu they are always on the shelf so someone must be buying them, but who!? and why!?

Weirdly, this is not true of raspberries which stay tasty all year round - I would like a berry farmer to explain how this can be. Confused

I do usually stick to raspberries tbf

I only buy them if spot reduced ones that look promising. They’ve been surprisingly ok but they did look like they would be . I loved the post earlier whose parents said theirs tasted like turnips Smile

I got some reduced in Tesco last week as the 2 year old was pestering me for some. They were really nice! Very surprised, as I was expecting tasteless blobs.

I will very occasionally buy them in winter for Gdcs, who love them, but the usual rule here is seasonal, U.K. grown ones only.

Dh likes them on his cereal whenever possible but he now knows not to risk buying imported ones out of season, unless he wants a bollocking!

AnnnaBananna · 01/12/2020 09:40

I buy them for my toddler because berries and bananas are the only fruit he’ll eat. I don’t eat them myself unless it’s summer.

nosswith · 01/12/2020 09:41

I don't. Seasonality for vegetables and fruit is something I like, and also am not keen on the environmental impact of importing fruit that is available for some of the year in the UK.

MrsMigginsMate · 01/12/2020 09:44

I'm constantly being nagged to get my 5 a day, I really dislike eating most fruit and veg but I'm a grown up so I grab whatever is in the supermarket and crunch and chew my way through it in misery because the world decided to make gross food good for my body. I don't give a shit if it's in season. Its all disgusting either way but I do it to set an example for my kids and to take responsibility for my health.

Unfortunately my doctor doesn't allow me to have my preferred 5 a day (chips, chocolate, sweets, cake and biscuits). Grin

Me. Ds has Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorder, and strawberries are on the very, very short list of foods he will eat, so he has them daily. The Waitrose ones are really good. Though he does wolf down in season British strawberries when it’s that time of year, and loves strawberry picking, so they must taste very different.
