I know that the big things (secure housing, relationships and finances, good physical and mental health) make all the difference. But I just turned on the car radio and it got me thinking about the small, inexpensive things that make life so much better. Here are mine:

Radio 4
The Sunday Times
Having a lovely coffee shop next to the small office I rent
Cheese from the market
Having a village library
Good footpaths nearby
An open fire
Being able to go swimming each week ( roll on Wednesday!)
Baths
Gardener's World and Call My Agent (French comedy drama)
Being on a good bus route (I'm now down to only one school run, thank God)
Brogues and colourful tights

What are yours'?

A piece of music I love coming on R3.
Coming home to my warm, tidy house on a cold day, I always appreciate it.
Having breakfast in the garden early on a day that's going to be very hot.
Exploring a new town that has interesting buildings and a good high street.

Goingdooolally · 01/12/2020 09:09

Sourdough bread with salted butter
Porridge with honey and banana and an americano with hot milk twice a week at my local cafe.
Walking near my house where I can see amazing views to my home city across the water.
A hug from my children
Foot massage from DH
Log burner
Autumn leaves
Proper thermal tops
Soft all saints leggings snd a big flannel shirt, super soft from being washed a hundred times.
Heated seats in my car
Thermos of coffee for work
My AirPods

Thanks so much for all of these responses. There are so many things mentioned on here that I love too but don’t think to do. I’m definitely getting almond croissants for breakfast on Sunday!

I asked my eleven year old the same question this morning and she said:

Knowing where my glasses are (hah!)
New bassoon reeds ( niche, I know)
Our pets
Being able to be in touch with my friends ( spot the hidden agenda there....)
Tights that fit properly
Baking on Saturday afternoons

All tea.

NHS treatment.

EternalOptimist7 · 01/12/2020 10:56

WishingHopingThinkingPraying - curious what you meant to type instead of “ sliced pan”!

kaleishorrid · 01/12/2020 12:01

Loving all of these.

I love that so many of you love radio 3 and 4 - hopefully the BBC will never be privatised.

That first cup of tea in the morning.

A hug (when we can) and a smile from the children in the family.

A home cooked meal.

A home made cake

Going out for a smoothie/iced coffee with my DD
Reading a book
Eating nice chocolate
Visiting London or Paris
Drinking a nice glass of wine in the bath
I remember when I lived in the U.K., u used to love 200 denier tights (satin feel) from boots. Always felt amazing to wear in the winter time

Feedingthebirds1 · 01/12/2020 12:52

The robin and the blackbird who come to the back door and harass us to feed them.

The hedgehogs who come into the garden to feed in the hedgehog houses (mostly only seen on night cameras, but still lovely).

Classical music.

Buying loads of socks all the same, so I can just chuck them in a drawer when they've been washed and know that when I grab two in the morning they'll match.

DP brushing my hair.

Grittlelayrabbit · 01/12/2020 12:54

EternalOptimist, a sliced pan is what the Irish call a sliced loaf.

Boredsilly · 01/12/2020 12:56

Seeing my DD happy
Going for long walks
Coffee
Gin
Snuggling up on the sofa with my DH and DD
Going to the gym

Boredsilly · 01/12/2020 12:57

Also reading and listening to Radio 2

Moltenpink · 01/12/2020 13:03

I worked somewhere where there was a canteen, and in the morning you could help yourself to free toast with butter. I worked there for 15 years and never got bored of it!

Flupibass · 01/12/2020 13:40

Neils yard bubble bath
Scented candle in the room where I work from home
Perfume on the days I go into work
Classical music
Cycling and walking with my dog
When my dog curls up next to me
Messages from friends and family
My kindle
Good chocolate, especially if I’ve been healthy all week
Lovely views on my walks
My coats, I don’t have many but have one for every weather!

Feedingthebirds1 · 01/12/2020 14:16

Forgot one, just for this time of year.

Knowing that it's only just under three weeks before the nights start getting lighter/sunset gets later. It might only be by a few seconds at first, and the nights are still dark, but it's going in the right direction

Spongebobsquarefringe · 01/12/2020 14:23

@Jellycatspyjamas I need more info on this machine! The velvetiser is so expensive. I’ve added it to my basket so many times!

Freshly mad bed
Traffic cops and my favourite chocolate (the tv show not just eating chocolate with random police men)
My favourite candle burning
My coffee but can only be made my certain perilla as they make with love and it always tastes best

Jellycatspyjamas · 01/12/2020 14:32

@Spongebobsquarefringe it was a cheap effort from the Lidl aisle of doom - £22 and works like a dream, will heat milk, froth milk and make hot chocolate. The resulting drink isn’t hot enough but not burning so safe for the kids bedtime drinks. I love it.

TheHelpfulHiker · 01/12/2020 14:40

Aldi click and collect has been a game changer the last couple of weeks.
Our lovely walk to and from school through the park.
My cross stitch magazine arriving every month (and planning all the projects I'll never have time to complete)
Tea. All the tea.

Simple things Smile

TheHelpfulHiker · 01/12/2020 14:41

@Spongebobsquarefringe I nearly put Police Interceptors on my list. love a traffic cop Blush

WellTidy · 01/12/2020 14:42

Fresh cut flowers
Nice room sprays, reed diffusers and candles (don't have to be pricey)
Having weather appropriate clothing and accessories for when I need them
Lamps
Fresh bedding
Cuddly throw
Diet Coke
Sourdough buttered toast
Getting into bed with the DC
Modal or 95/5 M&S pyjamas
Eating whatever DS1 bakes
Friday nights - I try and have all chores done and dinner prepped by the time DS1 comes home from school, so that we can have a cocktail when DH finishes work and I don't have to think about anything after that
Central heating - this is huge for me as I am always cold and our house can be draughty

ladybee28 · 01/12/2020 14:45

@Pyewhacket

No road works on the main road into work Space near the entrance in the car park Nobody off sick Enough qualified staff to cope All my patients still breathing when I hand over None of my staff in tears or shaking. Steaming hot shower before I leave. A day off to myself Sex on a sunday morning
@Pyewhacket that post belongs in a book of poetry.
WellTidy · 01/12/2020 14:48

Fiona Cairns Rose bubble bath (Waitrose, about £6 for 500ml)
A bath
My hair colour, 2-3 washes after its been coloured and has settled down a bit
